Tell me about this LS engine???
I have some knowledge of LS engines. I know they are awesome!!!
I may have an opportunity to obtain a 6.0 out of a 2003 Cadillac Escalade, might take the trans also, but it's all wheel drive... The engine has almost 400,000 miles on it. Has always run good. I have worked on it a bunch for current owner. can't stop oil leak at back of engine. I have attacked everything except the rear main and back cover, not interested on repairing those. Anything good or bad about this particular year 6.0? Can it be bored? how much? I am pretty sure it is an iron block... I saw someone that made a rear adapter setup that bolts to the back of a trans like this vehicle has (all wheel drive, trans attaches to transfer case). Is an adapter made that can be purchased to use trans as 2WD? THanks!!! |

That would be an LQ9, which is basically an LQ4 with flat-top pistons so it becomes a high-output engine making 345 HP stock. I have one out of a 2004 and I was pleased to find it for that reason. 400,000 miles is a lot, but not a big deal if you bore it out and do a complete rebuild. I don't know the history of the engine, but I wouldn't swap it without tearing into it to at least determine its condition. If you have an opportunity to drive it, I would. If you don't want to or can't get into the internals, you can check compression, pull valve covers, pull spark plugs and manifolds (to look at pistons/cylinders) to get a little more insight as to its condition.
Besides that, this vintage of LS is the best for parts and customization. The computers are easy to tune, parts are cheap, and iron blocks are tough. I would disagree with GIZZ though on the 4L60 part though. You can certainly build one up to be tougher, but a reman 4L80 or even 4L65 would still be better in my opinion.

For the same $$, time and effort as you rebuilding the engine, you can get a low mileage unit and be far ahead. I have never seen a rebuild go for less than a good low mileage unit.

LOW mileage ones are getting hard to find!!.... i have sold over 1000 ls engines... even 100k engines are hard to get, if he can get a good deal on it.. it is worth building.... i just sold a 6.0 LQ9 without trans with 109k on it with wring and computer for $2750.00

Not sure when I will end up with this. I was looking to get this engine, slide it under the work bench, work on it between important things...Looking to keep it for a spare for my 2005 Silverado, 5.3. Th e5.3 has no issues. Bought it 2 years ago from a good friend that was nearing the end of his life. He passed last August. He bought it new. I knew the life long history of it. It had some silver powder in the coolant reservoir, that he didn't mention. That's OK I got it for a good price, and it uses no coolant (has the 706 heads) |

Don't overlook the 5.3's either. Everyone coming from old school thinks they need a 6.0, when a 5.3 will make more power much easier than a typical street 350 SBC.
