Axle to trailing arm u bolt torque?
1965. Wondering what to torque the u bolts to. I got new ones when I put an aftermarket panhard bar on. I had previously written down 275-300 but my torque wrench doesn't even go that high.

Re: Axle to trailing arm u bolt torque?
Thanks RocknRod. From that link suggestions are all over the board. Suggestions are: 200, 145, 270, 145 or for 11/16" u bolts 175.

Re: Axle to trailing arm u bolt torque?
I can go online and find out, do you know what size the bolts are?
I'm in a meeting pretending this is important.

Re: Axle to trailing arm u bolt torque?
I did "as hard as my shop impact can bang them on" when I replaced my arms.

Re: Axle to trailing arm u bolt torque?
Most torque specs shown for u-bolts go from 5/8” to ¾” u-bolts grade 5 and grade 8 being different specs. That goes for standard hex head screws as well. My search was fruitless concerning 11/16"? - maybe someone else can give you that number, I couldn't find it. I know what I would do, is extrapolate that from the torque charts but that's just me.

Re: Axle to trailing arm u bolt torque?
Why not split the difference and go 250 or so? I usually just rattle them as tight as my impact will go. Decent rule-of-thumb:

Re: Axle to trailing arm u bolt torque?
I think this is the info you're looking for. When I did this, i maxed out the torque wrench to 150 ft lbs, then snugged things up real good using a breaker bar with 6 foot cheater.

Re: Axle to trailing arm u bolt torque?
I think it would be easy enough to put them so tight that the axle tube would distort.
OTOH I Inherited an old truck that had seen better days and the rear end would wander around inside the U bolts. A steel wedge driven in and tack welded cured that. The next owner had a lot of restoration to do but paying only $250 for a 68 short box I think he did OK. |

Re: Axle to trailing arm u bolt torque?
I'd shoot for 210 to 215 - http://www.eatondetroitspring.com/wp...loads/ubts.pdf
But 220 would be good. Not 320. But as you see everyone has opinions since it isn't in writing. And then . . .
