Gas Sending Unit O Ring
I ordered a new sock strainer, O-ring and a new plastic float for the 72'.
My in cab tank is clean and the sender unit is in excellent condition. ![]() The sock strainer however was splitting at it's seam so I ordered the above parts. I forgot to notice the orientation of the O-ring tab l when I removed the sender rings and seal. Does the little tab on the rubber O-ring need to be installed in a certain clock position or not? Is that tab just a finger grab? ![]() Thanks, Sam Last edited by samkost; 06-19-2020 at 01:50 PM. |

Re: Gas Sending Unit O Ring
I put one in a couple of years ago and I don't really recall the little tab. Some good advice though is to coat it real good with Vaseline, it helps it spread and seal.

Re: Gas Sending Unit O Ring
I did some more searching and read a few past posts here on our forum.
Some O-ring seals for sale are offered without the small inside tab. ![]() Sheedip and Threerun, Thanks for your replies. Vaseline makes sense since it’s petroleum based. Will do! On a safety note I read from a member here, you should use a brass punch on the lock ring tabs when removing or installing to avoid the possibility of creating sparks. ![]() Also to tap the lock ring tabs evenly around the circumference to keep the seal and lock ring centered when tightening. Still curious about that O-ring tab. ![]() Sam |

Re: Gas Sending Unit O Ring
I replaced mine a few months ago and I thought there was a spot on the bask side of the sending unit for the little tab on the O ring. I could be wrong though, sorry can’t remember. I’ve had no issues. It was very straightforward.
My filter sock had disintegrated so I had to replace mine as well. I ordered a plastic float as I read the new gas will eat a hole in a original floats. |

Re: Gas Sending Unit O Ring
It’s always something
![]() My parts came today so I installed the new float, O-ring, and sock on the tank sending unit. Everything went smoothly until I turned on the key to check the gas gauge with the new float. Gauge was reading just above empty with 1/3 full tank. ![]() Added 5 more gallons and got the same reading. Did my electrical tests and everything worked outside of the tank. Fiddled and cursed a bit ![]() Turns out the locking ring twisting around the sender wasn’t making a good ground contact. ![]() ![]() Hope my learning experience helps someone when it comes to putting in a gas tank sending unit. Re: Gas Sending Unit O Ring

Re: Gas Sending Unit O Ring
My 1972 C10 sock strainer is just pressed fitted onto the 3/8 in. sender pickup line.
I pushed it on and didn’t have to crimp mine. The old sock ring needed pliers to remove. There are two size diameter of socks, 3/8” and 5/16”, depending on your sender unit line. ![]() |
