G 50 spring option 1976

My '76 C 20 has it's original 56" G 50 HD rear springs and 1 of them is broken, so I'm replacing both. Any idea as to what lb spring the G50 option was? I'm looking at General Springs and they have several options available. I only use the truck to pull a loaded 22' car trailer with a 7,000 lb GVWR.

how many leafs in the pack ? and the overload on the bottom is a given .

7+1 or 8+1 or 9+1 ? the +1 is the overload .

i like my 22-547 springs . nice lighter ride . and i put in timbren bump stops for when i am loaded heavy .

My original springs are 8/1, a little less than a 3" spring pack, I'm guessing they're rated at 2600lbs? Just wanting a simple spring setup, no over loads or bump stops, I don't mind a little stiffer ride when M/T. I ended up with a new set of 9/1 General Springs #22 617, rated at 3955 lbs, 4 1/16 pack. I think that may really affect the ride when empty though.

you will know there in there . . .

you can always pull a leaf or 2 per pack . but space them apart if you do . dont pull 2 direct leafs . ex: #3 and #4 . . . go #3 and #5 that kind of spacing .

I talked with General Springs today and they said that their 2600 lb spring was the same as the GM G 50 HD spring option, and their 3500 lb was custom and never offered thru GM, it would also raise my vehicle a little, so I ended up ordering the 2600. Thanks for the replies.

With the old springs, my truck had an inch & a half lean at the pass rear, really noticeable where the bed meets the cab. With the new springs installed, the pass side is only down a half inch. It's much better, but I'd like to get it even. Any ideas?

swap springs side to side and recheck . it works a lot of the time .

otherwise take a old leaf from the old springs and make a spacer and bolt it to the spring pack on the bottom just like another leaf would be to level it out . and its still sandwiched with the center pin so it wont go anywere .

I thought about swapping from side to side, that is a lot of work, but I may do it. Adding the extra leaf is a good idea too.

make sure to measure from the floor up to the frame .

could be a body bushing going out making it look like a lean .

I measured from the bed sides, bumper and frame, every measurement came out the same, a half inch difference from side to side in the rear. The front measured out fine, no difference between the sides and the cab mount cushions still look good. The lean isn't that bad, but I'd like it a little closer. My work hours won't allow me to get to a frame shop until November, so I'll post with those results. Thanks, Dave

If it measures out consistently & you're ok w/the ride, I would just take the easier path of shimming the one side as it can easily be undone if/when it's off a frame rack.
