Running short headers
Hi All,
I have a 1960 GMC that we just swapped out the 305 v6 and replaced it with a 400 SBC. The truck is about 15 miles away from the exhaust shop and I currently do not have a trailer. With running shorty headers will I have any issues driving it to the exhaust shop? Other than it being stupid loud. |

Re: Running short headers
As long as theres nothing behind the header that could burn or melt you shouldn't have any issues...I drove one for yrs with nothing but manifolds on it...

Re: Running short headers
No I've done it, many have. In fact I will do it when I'm ready to have the exhaust done.

Re: Running short headers
Thanks, guys. That's kinda what I figured. The headers dump close to the front cross member. I was just worried about burnt or bent valves.

Re: Running short headers
Your starter and oil filter are going to get very hot. Way hotter than I would run one.

15miles? You'll be fine.

Re: Running short headers
I bout a couple of cheap flared flexible pipes from the auto parts store and ran them down and tied them with hangers to the frame and drove to the shop.

Re: Running short headers
I would ere on the side of caution here. One bad backfire and yes you will bend a valve. All your work down the drain in an instant. Once is all it takes. Be safe. Have it towed and don't worry about it. Much better than a loud white knuckled 15 mile drive that could ruin your engine. I am not saying it WILL ruin your engine, but there is a slight possibility and that is just too much for me. It's your truck though.
