Blazer and Jimmy Fuel Neck Styles
Surprisingly there are different styles. I thought I’d illustrate the differences with photos drawn from here on the forum. Feel free to clarify if anything is incorrect or add more to expound.
Here are examples of the 69-70 style...two-piece

Re: Blazer and Jimmy Fuel Neck Styles
1971 - also a two-piece...I believe the upper part that attaches to the bedside is the same used on 71-72 pickup RPO NL2 aux fuel tanks.

1972 one-piece style...note use of a tie strap securing the vapor hose to the metal pipe above the floor pan

Re: Blazer and Jimmy Fuel Neck Styles
I suspect all years made use of this bracket to support the fuel line and accompanying vapor line below the floor pan.
Non-CST K5s used the metal cover over the fuel neck. CSTs had the rear panels that served to cover the neck.

Re: Blazer and Jimmy Fuel Neck Styles
Thanks Dwayne. Fun stuff. You were an inspiration for the idea based on an old post of yours. Crazy that GM changed the style this many times.

All I can say is subscribed. It's too late for my brain to process all that.

Re: Blazer and Jimmy Fuel Neck Styles
Never realized that there were so many differences.
Where is the best place to find info on the pipe that goes next to the filler neck with the 3 small hose connections at the bottom? |

Re: Blazer and Jimmy Fuel Neck Styles
Factory assembly manual is a good start plus photos from prior builds and part outs. I think there is some variation in tank plumbing for 72 compared with other years. Here’s an example diagram from said manual - I’ll post a pic from my 72 build.

Re: Blazer and Jimmy Fuel Neck Styles
It’s hard to follow in the diagram. Is the center hose the one that goes to the front?

Here’s an example of the most recent aftermarket iteration of the K5 fuel tank with the correctly configured neck.
(All borrowed pics, thanks for posting)

Re: Blazer and Jimmy Fuel Neck Styles
Thanks Deadhead, I appreciate it.
I dont have the evap canister so I am looking at options for simplifying all of the pipes, hoses and connections. The evap system seems a little excessive for such a primitive vehicle. |

Re: Blazer and Jimmy Fuel Neck Styles
When I was young we used to rip all that stuff out. Now I realize that GM wasn’t that stupid. It’s nice having a car in the garage and not smell like gas!

Re: Blazer and Jimmy Fuel Neck Styles
I believe the fuel filler neck and gas tank were the last pieces i took off during dissasembly. By that point i was so irritated with rusted out screws and bolts that i dont think i took the time to properly survey the peices i was removing.
Thanks for another great writeup on the year differences.

Really useful photo taken by member PDXk5 that illustrates where the hose clamp goes on the splash shield and tie fastener location.

That is the came tie strap that 71 big block Chevelles use on heater/AC hose near the alternator.

So, you guys piqued my interest and I did the string wrap method to trace the OEM tie to determine the length. I didn’t want to ‘unzip’ it to avoid it breaking from fatigue or what not. Anyway, I measured the tie from the tip of the ‘loose’ end to the tip of the closed loop end and got 11 inches. Hope that is of use to you guys. Is there a source for correct style OEM ties offered in different lengths? I’m planning on replacing my original fuel tank with one of the correct repro styles from above, as well as new fuel lines. Was thinking I would/could fish the old lines out and the new lines into the metal strap and plastic tie but if the plastic tie breaks it would be good to know where I could get a correct style replacement. I’m going to be installing a fuel skid plate I recently had powder coated under the tank after the fuel tank is installed. I’ll start a new thread for that endeavor but could use some pointers on that as I tackle that later this winter. |
