LS Swap Power Steering - Flow Restrictor
Hey everyone,
Now that I'm driving my C10 one of the things that I'm noticing is really twitchy and light steering using the LS (hydroboost) power steering pump and my factory power steering box. From my reading, it seems like I need to use a flow restrictor (rather than shim the pump for lower pressure) - but I can't for the life of me figure out which one of the many flow restrictors on the market will work for my application. Has anyone else done this? If so, what part did you use? Thanks Eric |

Re: LS Swap Power Steering - Flow Restrictor
My 65 has an 80 power steering box and hydroboost works fine

Re: LS Swap Power Steering - Flow Restrictor
I probably should have been more clear - sorry about that.
My truck is not a hydroboost truck, and won't ever be, but the engine (and all associated accessories) I used came from a 2006 Yukon with Hydroboost. It works great, but the volume of fluid being pushed is way too much for the stock box and makes the steering insanely light and very twitchy. Research shows its a volume, not a pressure issue, but I can't make hide nor hair of which of the many volume restrictors I need to use to at least make it a bit less twitchy. I believe what I'm looking for is something like this; https://www.turnone-steering.com/pro...low-restrictor https://www.summitracing.com/parts/lss-gmls5027 I am just not sure exactly which fitting. I may call TurnOne but I figured I'd try here first. Before the LS swap, the Power steering pump on my 350 was dead, and a second one die within 10 miles. It appears to have been a combination of poorly installed pulley (before me,) bracket geometry/tightness, and poor quality replacements. The LS pump has been reliable so far. Thanks Eric |

Re: LS Swap Power Steering - Flow Restrictor
The TurnOne fitting you list is for a "canned ham" old style power steering pump...the one with the metal can style cover....
Assuming you have the standard LS series pump, the correct one should be https://www.turnone-steering.com/col...low-restrictor Most LS systems use a hydroboost brake assist system that has some loss of flow within the design...when fitted into a vehicle without hydroboost, you usually end up with too much flow... You should also look at caster and camber alignment for the front suspension...incorrect caster can cause a lot of issues... Hope this helps...

Re: LS Swap Power Steering - Flow Restrictor
you just need one of those fittings from a non/hydroboost pump, and it should work. I changed out to a non/hydro fitting my 04 tahoe that is factory hydroboost and it fixed my twitchy steering.

Re: LS Swap Power Steering - Flow Restrictor
I have the same issue with my 68 C10 LS swap. Not a hydro boost power steering pump but really light steering. Called Turn One and they didn't recommend a flow restricter. They recommended steering box mods. They seemed to know what they were talking about. It's on the list for this winters mods.

Re: LS Swap Power Steering - Flow Restrictor
It was over a year ago when I spoke to them but as I recall they have to disassemble the steering box and shin or machine something in the box. Best you give them a call and they can explain.

Re: LS Swap Power Steering - Flow Restrictor
Thank you everyone - I do have a non-Hydroboost PS pump here from a core engine I am playing with, so I can check the fittings on them. I am getting used to the way it steers now but I wouldn't argue with a bit less over-assisted feeling. I'll give Turn-One a call.
And yes - I absolutely need an alignment and I'll bring up adjusting the caster with them. Its on my ever growing checklist. Thank you again everyone! |
