Swapped motor starting issue
I swapped the 292 4 speed out for a 350 5 speed in my 1 ton. I have fire at the plugs, I think it is in time close enough to start, I have gas, but it's not even trying to start. Is there a wire that I'm missing? I have the hei, alt, and starter hooked up. No dummy light wires yet. I'm kinda lost. Fuel, fire, compression, start?? I've been here before, but this is giving me fits.
Thanks all |

Re: Swapped motor starting issue
My guess based on you have fuel, air, and spark. Would be the distributor is out of time. If the dizzy tried to fire to far after TDC it will act like it is not even trying to start.

Re: Swapped motor starting issue
Check all of your FACTS (Fuel, Air, Compression, Timing, Spark)
Check for +12v at the distributor when cranking. Verify you have the correct TDC and not 180* out. If you remove the valve cover or are lucky enough to have the oil cap over #1 valves, you should see the #1 intake valve closing just before TDC, and the exhaust valve moving just after TDC. Movement should be nearly immediate when turning the engine by hand. Verify that you have a squirt of fuel from the accelerator pump when the throttle linkage is cycled. Verify that the throttle is cracked slightly (throttle lever resting on idle screw - no gap) Perform a compression test to verify a healthy engine if needed. |

Re: Swapped motor starting issue
Timing way off is what comes to mind for me. Only other thing popping to mind is plug wires off also. Sounds more like a timing issue if you have spark at plugs and fuel at carb.

Re: Swapped motor starting issue
Did you do anything to the 350 before installing it?

Re: Swapped motor starting issue
Agree with above you are most likely out of time if you’re 100% you have spark and fuel.
