Front axle shaft universal joint upgrade?
Pulled the front axle shaft universal joint from my 71 K5 Blazer and boy were they toast. In finding part numbers for replacement, I came across this information.
Dana Spicer 5-260X - 4x4 Front Axle U-joint. Commonly known as the "Small" axle u-joint. This u-joint was found on early Jeep, Bronco, Chevy, Dodge, International and Ford 4X4 trucks before they realized that it was too small and started to use the larger and stronger 5-297X now the 5-760X Easy to spot on open knuckle front ends by measuring the bearing cap diameter. Utilizes inside "C" Clips to lock u-joint in place. Is there an upgrade that can be one to utilize the later universal joints? |

Re: Front axle shaft universal joint upgrade?
If you want to run the larger 760 joints then you'll have to get new shafts for the larger u-joints- whether you get aftermarket or used shafts from ~'73 and newer Dana 44 axles. There is no conversion joint or way to adapt a 260 shaft to accommodate the larger 760 joint.
