Haynes vs GM Service manual

I am sure the GM service manual ST 330-79 is better then a Haynes repair manual. But is it worth buying over the Haynes if I already a repair manual. Does the GM service manual come with full color wiring diagram?

Re: Haynes vs GM Service manual

The GM wiring diagram is a separate book not in the main service manual.

GM has several books.

1. Service manual
2. Supplemental service manual
3. Wiring diagram book
4. Assembly manual (for ~1980)
5. Drivers manual
6. Illustrated catalog
7. Parts catalog

I have them all plus the Haynes. It all depends on what you are trying to do.

Re: Haynes vs GM Service manual

I was hoping to find a full color wiring diagram. I have a 1978 service manual for my Trans Am and it has full color wiring diagrams in them. What is the wiring diagram manual that I might be able to do a search on?
Thanks

I don't think you can get the wiring diagrams new. Try ebay and search on Truck Wiring Diagrams.

Re: Haynes vs GM Service manual

The GM Manuals are far better than Haynes. And the Electric Manual is a separate book, as stated already. I found all mine on eBay. If you do a Google search for 78 Manuals, you’ll probably find other places that have them

Re: Haynes vs GM Service manual

If you're wondering what you'll get, download the service manual set for your year.

1979 would be three volumes;
Service
Unit Repair
Wiring

The wiring manuals up to 1986 are black and white fold out pages 11.5" x 35". The wiring diagram in the Haynes manual is only accurate for one year and I've forgotten which one.

Throw the Haynes in the garbage unless it is an older one. The new ones are so generic and watered down, they're not worth the purchase price in my opinion.

Re: Haynes vs GM Service manual

I have the same 78 Firebird manual with the full color diagram. Unfortunately, I have never seen that in any other GM manual. However, I will say that the GM manuals are much better as they are model specific. Haynes has too much general information.

That full-color fold-out is suitable for framing.

Haynes manuals have their place but they are very general.

The GM manual PDFs are in my sig. You should be able to find paper copies on evilbay for a reasonable price.

1989 T400 wiring manuals are color as well IIRC. Your F body manual is the first color GM wiring manual I've seen outside of that one.

Re: Haynes vs GM Service manual

yeah, the color made it expensive. In the early 90's we (my nephew and I split the cost) paid $400 for it at a swap meet. It may actually get buried with me!!

Re: Haynes vs GM Service manual

If you dig into the unit repair manuals you'll find automatic transmission fluid flow diagrams in color.
You don't see that kinda stuff in the post millennium manuals.

Re: Haynes vs GM Service manual

yes, I have seen that before.

In my 1980 Pontiac manual, the wiring was also color but were broken out into different systems instead of one big diagram. This was also the year they went from glass round fuses to flat blade plastic fuses.

By 1984 they cheaped out and went Black and white.

GM started using the ATC fuse panels in the trucks in 1979. 1978 was the last year of the AGC fuse blocks.

My cousin had a 1979 Berlinetta Camaro and IIRC it had ATC fuses too.

Do you also have the service technical bulletins that were sent to GM dealerships? I have yet to find a list of all the bulletins, so I don't even know how many are in existence.

There is a guy on ebay who sells color wiring diagrams for our trucks for around 25.00. I am thinking of buying one of these but not sure of the quality

I have an 84 GMC Light Duty Trucks Service Manual, and Haynes manual for mine. The Haynes I keep in the truck for "quick fixes" or diagnoses.

What is Chevrolet Service News? Are the service bulletins contained within the news? I'm interested in 78 Blazer and 78 k10 truck.

It was a periodical newsletter, not quite big enough to be called a magazine, distributed to dealership service departments at least as far back as the 1940's.
It changed into something called GM Techlink newsletters.
Not quite service bulletins but they had some interesting articles of interest to service techs.
There was a heads up about GM changing the Full to Empty resistance curve to keep the needle from moving as fast from Full to 1/2 tank in response to people complaining about fuel mileage during the fuel shortages in the 70's.

I don't have any of them at this point and didn't have very many when I had some. So... No.

The ones I did have had no information about CK trucks. Some do exist but I never had those volumes.

The fuel gauge weighting article was on one of the Corvette boards.
