Factory "stowage tool box" bed value?
What would you value an entire long bed that contained a factory stowage box, but the bed had some real "work truck" scars, but wasn't totalled or completely rusted out.
Were these cut and installed at the factory, or are the bedsides actually a different stamping? Thank you. |

Pictures will help with this. What is the condition of the door and liner if present? The side is a physically a different stamping. The doors are normally rusted out any more and the same goes for the section of the bed under the door.

Yes I know pics would help, I'm really just trying to gather bargaining chips before I go back to his house(and would then get pics). For now it's just talk.
Thank you for the reply. |

Re: Factory "stowage tool box" bed value?
If it was me looking at it,
Most of the value would be determined, In the condition of the Toolbox. Then over-all condition of the bed. If he has a key to the toolbox buy it As far a price goes, From your description, The toolbox is worth as much as the bed. Depending on condition of both of course. Ask what he wants for it, Then offer $200.oo or so less, Unless you like the first offer.

Re: Factory "stowage tool box" bed value?
For what it’s worth I paid $250 for my complete rust free nearly mint condition, complete tool box bed in 2015 from a member here. I could easily sell it for 1K plus right now but it’s straight as an arrow even on the bed floor and like I said the door is rust free. If the door is complete(hinge, lock, and handle/latch parts) completely rust free, and straight, it’s easily worth 4-500 on its own. Also does the bed come with a tailgate? That will affect pricing too. Based on what you are saying about the condition of the bed it’s self I’d say start at $250-300 and see what happens.

Re: Factory "stowage tool box" bed value?
OK Thank you guys for the numbers.
I'll go look at it soon. It is a chevrolet bed and I have a GMC with a GMC tailgate(but my current bed on the truck is also a Chevy bed) I am not restoring a "proper" truck, I really just need functionality. Dents and hard-use? OK Doesn't have proper trim? OK Rusted out of it's mind? No Go... |

Re: Factory "stowage tool box" bed value?
Here's some pics finally; I'd use my own tailgate(GMC)
The lip of metal underneath the hinges is rotted out. I couldn't get the door open so I don't know if the latch or hinges work. One corner of the door has the beginning of rot through, but I don't care. I want the function of a bed stowage box, not the look of a perfect truck. Is it easy to convert a wood bed to a medal bed? |

The bedsides won't care between wood bed or steel, but I believe the front panel does matter. You could use the front panel and steel floor from your current bed and use the toolbox sides. Basically take two beds to make one that you want and then sell off what's left if you don't want to keep it

The tool box doesn't look that bad. But you will want to fix that rust sooner rather than later. It will be full of rust inside you just watch. You can cut up a rocker panel to repair below the door. Spray those hinges a lot before trying to open it once you get it unlocked. I'd lube the handle and lock too. All that stuff is getting harder to find and isn't getting any cheaper.
