Stomp starter removed

Tonight I made a judgment call and decided to remove the stomp starter in favor of a gear reduction model, assuming my flywheel has the correct number of teeth. I made the decision partly based on the fact that with the new American Auto Wire wiring harness that I acquired, it has the provision for a solenoid wire and an ignition switch that also supports it. Also, I've installed a gear reduction starter in another car and love how quickly the engine kicks to life.

The plan tomorrow is to remove the dust cover, clean up the flywheel, count the teeth and use the flywheel to assist me in finding TDC. If the number of teeth is correct, then I will order the new starter, if not, then I'll be reinstalling the lead paper weight we call a starter.

The question is, has anyone found a grommet or filler panel to cover up the hole in the floor with the removal of the stomp starter?

What engine? I have a hard time keeping track of who has what.

Truth be I am not in favor of using an aftermarket gear reduction starter. The Delco units intended for newer GM cars and trucks yes, but not even those aftermarket one size fits all units as the best thing they do is tear up starter rings.

You can also get and original Delco starter that uses a solenoid instead of the push foot activated . They work well . Never tried one of the gear reduction starters so no input on that starter . Good luck.

This is what you have to do, I have never seen a gear reduction starter that fits in the hole in the bellhousing of a cast iron truck bellhousing and the early sixes have no holes to bolt a later gear reduction starter to them.

I'm not saying a starter doesn't exist but I have never seen one and actually never had a reason to look for one.

That and worse is I don't like the idea that there is no support for the end of the starter drive as in a Delco starter. My guess is that within a year you will be looking for a ring gear.

So there is a Delco starter for a 1959 - 261 cubic inch engine? My flywheel has 168 teeth.

Depends , did you use the early bellhousing and flywheel from the 216 or did you use the later bellhousing and flywheel from the 261 . The later bellhousing will not fit the stock crossmember with out some mods. Depends what you did.

Post Starter Interchange

Actually, he's right in counting the ring gear's teeth ~ .

When swapping starts you need to remember to count the teeth on the starter's Bendix .

Yes, there's a Delco 12 solenoid starter that's made for your truck, looks for 1959 1/2 ton with automatic .

I no longer remember the flywheel teeth counts but this is very important and the starters change Bendix teeth when changing from 6 to 12 volts .

There used to be an IGC Bendix that would mesh with the Chevy's 6 volt flywheel .
