Time to clean up the 283 V-8
I'm in the (slow) process of detailing my old '66. Let's see now, original V-8, 283, that makes like, 57 years of caked on grease, oil, and farmer wiring repairs. I am wanting to do all this without any major removals or upgrades, just cleaning.
I'm cleaning up the wiring, replacing only what is necessary, hoses, firewall and the engine itself. I've done some of my oldies before, just take my time, (I'm old and retired), it's amazing where you can reach with a screwdriver or a stick and with steel wool. I'll clean or maybe even paint the firewall, valve covers, oil breather, etc. Looks like the valve covers were originally dark grey or maybe even blue? Any help here? |

Yes, the truck engines were painted gray back then. Looks like it's cleaning up nicely.

Here's a link to one of our previous discussions on this that may help.

Re: Time to clean up the 283 V-8
I didn't have any paint left on my engine when I pulled it for a rebuild. I did how ever find a small sample left on the oil pan in which I went to my local paint shop and did a color match. I came up with this color. Also a pic of the formula used. And the sample I got from what was left of the paint on the oil pan.

Re: Time to clean up the 283 V-8
This is a good list of engine colors broken down by year, application and engine size.
http://www.1954advance-design.com/We...ineColors.html One good option for gray is from the filling station. https://store.fillingstation.com/det...ROSOL_CAN.html I used this color on my 235 6 cylinder and it turned out really nice.

Re: Time to clean up the 283 V-8
Thank you guys. Just what I needed. I'm going to order some of the paint and a set of valve cover gaskets and go ahead and pull the covers and re-paint them. Thanks again.

If you're a "close enough" kind of guy, here is Ford gray from the auto parts store. It has a gloss clear top coat from the same product line. Edit: I used their primer too.
