Any 60-66 Tail Light Upgrades?

Are there any upgrades to the original design for the tail light housings on these trucks?

I have a completely clean set up, and ordered a new harness {Junk, poor wire ends and crimping}

Before I make something does anyone offer an upgraded solution to the old twist & turn bulbs and the spring / contacts?

Thanks

Hi.
When i added the original style lights to mine i went with the full led insert.
Cut off the bulb adapter and went 3 pin connector.
Here in south africa gm used different lights, and importing the bezel and led insert was cost wise cheaper compared to original lights.

Good idea, but I can't use LED's on this project. I am currently searching for a socket from a newer vehicle I can simply modify the rear steel housing, twist it in and be done. Each "new" 1157 aftermarket twist in type I have are just lacking in quality. they might work till you hit a bump.

Can relate to crappy bulb holders. Had my share with aftermarket holders.
Best of luck with parts sourcing.

Re: Any 60-66 Tail Light Upgrades?

Well I just bored the center hole out to 1 inch plus a tad, found a 3 wire twist in a plastic housing with a ground wire. Then I filed out the metal house for the tabs.

It pushed together easily and no no more issues.

I wish someone would just mass-produce the housing for an updated socket.

Not a problem, just follow the steps in this thread: https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=712252

You can upload a picture from your computer or phone. You can post 5 pictures at a time, but you have to hit the upload button for each picture. I do this method of picture posting all the time.

I used these in my housings. Got them from Summit. Used the tab to directly wire the ground rather than relying on body ground.

I did consider those. Definitely would consider it in the future.

Re: Any 60-66 Tail Light Upgrades?

Auctioneerhere,

Thanks for posting your solution and pictures!

Using the original sockets and grounding through the housing is always the weak link on any old car/truck lighting.

I've ordered some of the plastic, twist in sockets and will be modifying my old taillight housings soon.
