1 piece or 2 piece steering column/shaft
I know the 67/68 columns were 1 piece and the later years were 2 piece column/shaft. At some point, someone has switched the column in my 67. I only know this because my truck was originally a manual/floor shifter and now its an automatic. I ordered a new automatic/tilt steering column and not sure if I need to order additional parts to make everything fit correctly or if I can re-use parts that are currently there.
Based on the attached pics, is this column/shaft considered 1 or 2 pieces? Thanks. |

Re: 1 piece or 2 piece steering column/shaft
It looks like a one piece to me.
The parts you will need depends on what you bought. I think the GM columns had a 36 spline on the end. But aftermarket columns can come with other ends like 3/4" double D. Looking at what you have, I would: -Get a new P/S box -Get a new rag joint (there are 2, make sure to get the correct one, depends on the box). -I would install your new column and attach an appropriate universal joint (ie 36 spline on one side and 3/4" DD on the other-depending on your situation). -Then I would cut your current shaft to fit between the rag joint and the U joint. -PS> When installing a u joint on a DD, I like to make a dimple with a drill point for the set screw to dig into. |

Re: 1 piece or 2 piece steering column/shaft
You need the intermediate shaft, 36 spline 67&68. You have a one piece now. Not easy to find but I have one PM me if interested. 69 up went to a bigger intermediate shaft .
I went through that with my 68. I added a tilt manual column and that is what I needed but columns differ. But as already mentioned with any upgraded steering column do your homework, check for size, etc.. Last edited by ghackett1; 10-23-2023 at 06:11 PM. |
