Hood side to side adjustment
I have my hood aligned front and rear. Is there any side movement available where the hinge bolts to the hood? Gap on one fender tighter than other. OEM hinges (new) and original fenders.

Re: Hood side to side adjustment
May sound a bit crude but the side to side adjustment is typically done by pushing on the hood near the hood hinge to move the hood a bit left or right.
You might get a little adjustment in the hinge slotted bolt holes. |

Yep. I watched my body man do this on my truck. Looked like he was going to wreck my hinges but he got it to line up perfectly.

Re: Hood side to side adjustment
The old school body men knew a lot of neat tricks. Learned a new one (on me anyway) a while back. I put new cab mounts on Otis then took the truck to a old school body man to address the hood, front bumper, gaps, doors etc.
The re-pop passenger door needed to go forward a slight bit at the top, but both hinges were already hard (no shims) to the front of the door hinge mounting surface and the A pillar mounting surface. He took a heavy leather welding glove rolled it up like a burrito the short way, then centered it in the top hinge in the open position between the hinge leaf's. He then closed it on the glove and springing the door until he reached the desired collapse rearward moving the door hinge mounting surface slightly rearward. I think he had done this before... because about 2 springs on the door and it was perfect. |

Re: Hood side to side adjustment
The position of the striker plate on the underside of the hood may need to be adjusted as well. If it is not lined up with the latch, then it can push the hood off-center in the closed position.

Thank you, you may have just helped me solve my issue. Not that you can really tell on my rusty ol' piece, but the hood is off to the passenger side a bit and I notice it does move from its natural fall when it latches. Now this is on my weekend 'to-do' list. Along with starting the power steering install, continue working on the 'custom' rear bumper, etc.

Re: Hood side to side adjustment
Sometimes takes force to make parts fit. Why we generally do not want customers present when fitting parts. Many do not know the effort it takes to make the end result nice.

Re: Hood side to side adjustment
I had the same issue on my '67.... the hood needed to move about 1/16" to the passenger side and the slots had no more adjustment,
I was about to take it all back off and open up the slots when my body and paint guy came by. He raised the hood and pushed it rather "violently" to the side several times....it now lines up perfectly.

Re: Hood side to side adjustment
Don't be afraid of forcing things to line up. Forty some years ago, I was hangin around the body shop. The bodyman showed me that the new door seemed to be twisted. Or it could be the body being not perfect after the collision repair. He only cared that the door line up. So he put a chunk of 2 x 4 between the rocker and the door. Within a few heave ho's, he had the door lining up perfectly.
