I just found this site and thought I would join. I found this site because I was looking for information on a truck I was considering buying. It is a 71 short wide, has decent red paint, 5 lug, disc brakes, and AC. The guy went down to $4000, so I took it for a test drive, it drove fine, had a little play in the steering, and the gears are too low, probably 4.11 or something similar. Now the bad parts. The floor pans are perfect, but the cab corners are rusted out, and had been bondoed over before the paint. One fender corner and one door were the same. Also the truck has a plastic bed liner installed, but I looked in the fenderwell and saw the bed and part of the fenderwells had rusted away. I expected most of this on a truck this old but the thing that keeps me from buying is the truck has roll pans on it and the frame rails were cut to make room for the roll pans. Anyone think this is a bad reason to pass on this truck? I am a fair welder but do not want to have to find a donor frame and weld the frame on this truck just to put bumpers on it, the roll pans were poorly done. If anyone is interested it is at A and F motors in Whitewright Texas. Email me and I will get the phone number from home. So I am still looking for a 67-72 short wide in the Dallas area if anyone knows of anything.
Also a little more about me. I live north of Dallas, have a 66 mustang project, its a basket case but a good start. Also have a slick looking 86 short wide. The motor and transmission were going out and instead of replacing the drive train I bought a 2002 Trans Am. If anyone in the north Texas area has a project going let me know, I'll bring the welder and plasma cutter. Thanks.

Doug, welcome to the board, you have stumbled on the best place for info on these trucks.
As for the 71, I would personally pass. I know 4 grand isn't a whole lot, however, i would expect moret han a bondo wagon for that price.
Roll pans suck too.

Welcome to the board, Doug!

I am with Longhorn on the truck question. You have named off some serious issues and there are probably more. I would suggest that you keep looking as real decent trucks are available.

Welcome from Kansas. This is a good site with lots of active folks with a lot of experience with these trucks. Sounds like you were smart to pass on that one. Keep looking and you will find what you're looking for, especially in your state.

Welcome from South Mississippi! Check out the Parts board here, and you will get a better idea of what a $4000 truck should look like.

Welcome from Denison , I would pass on it thats too much money for it needing all that work. There is a guy on 69 going towards Bell's that had a few truck's setting around for sale . He's across from Mr. Carpet

Welcome! You will find great info here. I agree with the above, that truck doesn't sound like it is worth anywhere near $4,000.

welcome from Springfield, MO

Too much bondo, i'd pass, as my dad always said, "Son, Look at a truck's body, if it needs alot of work, pass, you can always get a new motor if you have to but the body needs to last a while."

Remember you get what you pay for, but I am sure that you have heard that before. That is a great price but not for that truck. Welcome to the board from AZ!
