carb rebuild finished!!!! lots of pics!! ;)

hi all!

the 60 degree weather gave me the chance to reinstall my rebuilt carb on the truck....

since the rebuild of my heater core thread (clicky) was such a highly referenced project on the board, i decided to try and repeat a similar process here.... so here is what i did:

i bought a $12 rebuild kit and an $8 float
my carb is a Rochester 2bbl (barrel)
(the kit says its for a 2G, 2GC, 2GE, or 2GV model... i'd have to look at my numbers to know which one i have exactly)

first, i removed the air filter, making sure not to place it across the two battery terminals

(please be patient as i load the pics up one at a time, and describe each one)

then i unbolted the fuel line --- being careful not to break it twist it (as my line is pretty fragile after so many years of rust)....

i left the fuel filter and its larger bolt cap in place....

then, i unscrewed the tie-down for my manual choke cable.... most of you will not have a manual choke cable...

most of those that were manual years ago have been converted.... and only 1968, and 1967 trucks originally came with manual choke cables to lead inside to the dash panel....

carefully lift the carb off your intake manifold, and dont forget to plug the hole in the manifold with a rag....

removing the old gasket between the carb and the manifold can be tricky.... dont get any of the gasket pieces down in the manifold --- you dont want junk down in there! i used a screwdriver to scrape it off, but i was super-careful.....

taking the carb apart was really easy....

the instructions listed a particular order to take things apart, but i found it easiest to just tear into the carb, and try to take as much as possible apart into pieces...

in addition, the drawings that were supplied with the carb kit were really awful.... so trying to decide which parts they wanted removed was rather difficult..... i just took it all apart into pieces as much as possible.... and when i got stuck, i started trying to decipher their diagrams and drawings.... it worked well..... it was a simple mechanical processs.... i think any of us would be able to do it easily.....

in the end, there were two major problems with my carberator that i discovered..... the first was a small hole in my float as shown here:

its kinda hard to see in the pic, but the hole is on the lower left side of the float.....

the other problem was one of my gaskets.....

the gasket was missing an entire section.....

my finger is pointing to the section of the gasket that was apparently eaten away or that had deteriorated over time.....

no wonder my carb didnt work well!

because i have a manual choke setup (and not the automatic setup that came with this particular set of carb models), there were a lot of pieces that i did NOT use that came in the kit....

here is what i didnt use:

there WAS this stupid little white thing in the kit that i never was able to figure out what it was used for..... and there were no instructions indicating what it was for.... but i assume it must be associated with the auto choke mechanism....

also, there was a bracket that was part of the float mechanism that i took out of the carb, but did not include it in the rebuild because the diagrams in the instructions did not list it as part of the carb.... i'm not sure of its purpose other than minor protection of the float.... but here is a picture of it:
