spring maintenance.... (what has jewels be up to this week?).....
bought a cheap $20 digicam, so i can post pics now.... (you thought i was insane *before* i owned a digicam )
my truck exhaust is leaking between the exhaust manifold and the block on the pass side.... you could see the condensation puff out in the early mornings.... so.... took the truck to meineke to have them break loose the bolts on the exhaust manifolds (i dont have a torch or an impact wrench).... they busted three studs off in the process..... here is the first one with one busted stud:

and here is somethin strange i discovered..... when i had the exhaust put on (back in 1996-1997 or so).... the guy did somethin really screwy ----
on one side where the manifold bolts to the exhaust, its concave - or donut like --- but the other side is opposite - or convex in a sense..... its really strange --- they dont match.... not sure why... the meineke guys thought it was strange too..... here is pic of the drivers side:

so, i started lookin for some replacement manifolds..... and if you saw my post on the parts board, i almost went with a new pair from Tim Christian (who is an awesome guy!).... but i decided that $280 was too much to drop on exhaust.....
so... i met up with Joesjunk from Independence, MO..... stopped by his place on Monday, and picked out two nice lookin manifolds from his stash in his shop..... BTW, Joe has some really nice trucks sittin at his place Thanks for the manifolds Joe! (he made me a really good deal!) then, i took the manifolds to Bill Performance Auto Shop..... a good shop with a good reputation in the area..... Bill had the manifolds soaked in Moretic (sp?) acid for 24 hours, which removed most of the rust.... then, he bead-blasted them for me (i also dont have access to a bead blaster)..... he has checked them for cracks, and so far - no cracks!!! woohoo!!!..... here they are after blasting and soaking....

Jewels I noticed in your picture that you are leaving the end of April. You just got here and you're leaving so soon? You're right, Joe is a super nice guy and he has some nice trucks.

now, today, Bill is workin on getting the studs out of the base of the manifold shown in pic 5.... (where it connects to the exhaust pipe)
he is also tryin to get out the stuck bolt in pic 7 (he has tried a couple of times to get at it with no luck so far).... (this bolt would connect to the block) and finally, in pic 8, a previous owner of these manifolds had already torched out the studs for the manifold.... so i think we will have to torch out the bolts the PO used to replace the studs (cause they are now rusted fast in the holes)..... (this is where it bolts to the exhaust pipe) i think i have decided to NOT put studs in all the manifolds where it bolts to the exhaust, cause we'd have to re-tap and such, and thats messy.... so, i went to the hardware store, and bought a big round of stainless steel bolts to use both into the block and to bolt up to the exhaust pipes..... in addition, i decided to use a super high temp paint to paint the manifolds so they look cast iron in color..... should be pretty slick once finished..... Bill said for me to check back today to see about gettin the manifolds back.... i'm TOTALLY excited to get them back on the truck.... any suggestions for brands or type of gaskets to use between the manifolds and the block? thanks in advance! jewels

it worked, except we had to fabricate a drive shaft (which we were gonna do anyways cause we couldnt find a short step drive shaft)... and we had to play with some of the shifter and clutch linkages.... but bottomline, it works..... yeah - its rigged, here is a pic to show you.... most everyone i talked to on the board about this agreed that with my setup, header wont fit around the engine mounts or my suspension... so i'm stuck with manifolds until i can remount the engine, and get a new driveshaft (yuck!).... as for the deal on the manifolds, yes --- it was a good deal! he gave me both manifolds in as-is condition for $40! woohoo!!! THANKS JOE! jewels.

my lease has come up due on April 30th, and i have to sign another six monther, or move.... and i really dont know what to do..... i'm looking for a full time engineering job... and if i find a good engineering job here in KC, i might consider staying..... i came here for an intership, and that is over, but i'm looking for a job that pays good money right now.... so we will see..... i seriously have NO CLUE i wish i did.... and i must say, in the last month, KC has started to grow on me... the weather is so nice here, so early... i LOVE the humidity so far.... and i can work on the truck a lot longer here, than i could in indiana (i think its still cold there, right guys?)..... i dunno.... a warmer climate is attractive..... bottomline, i'll go where the job is, i think..... i've been doing some studies (marketwise) for opening up my new business, but the studies are takin quite a lot of time, and i havent picked a city for that yet.... hmmm hope that answers your question! jewels.
