I have a problem
I just finished bending and puting a new fuel line on, the one from the pump to the carb, but now the engine won't start. I can get it to start if I pour fuel down the carb, but then it will stop shortly afterwards. So I am assuming my fuel pump has went out and I am not getting any fuel into the engine. It has a new fuel filter, and none of the lines are kinked or damaged. What do you guys think? Is it the pump? Why would it suddenly go out after I replaced the line? any other thoughts on what it could be

did you use teflon tape on the fittings? you might have taped the hole closed. Did you pull the line off before the filter and do you have fuel in the line. or is there no fuel anywhere in the line at all.

Did you crank it over for a moment, or did you just hit the key and expect it to start?
Since the line is empty, (and any filter in that line) then it may take a moment of cranking the engine over to fill everything back up. |

Thanks for the replies,
Yes I did crank it over for some time, about 15-20 mintues I tried to get it to start. There is no teflon tape, but I am not sure about fuel in the line, I didn't have time to pull the line back off. Yes there is gas in the tank, and I didn't check but I am sure the filter is in right. I will check that and if there is fuel in the line and get back to you guys.

okay, so I took of the line, there was gas present when I unscrewed it from the carb, and there was also gas when I unscrewed it from the pump. The gas at the carb could have gotten there from me putting fuel down the carb, but there is gas in the pump too, so that means the pump is functioning, am I correct?

Connect your fuel line back to the pump and before you connect it to the carb get someone to crank the engine and using a container of some sort, you should see the fuel coming out of the line. If you have fuel being pumped out of the line, you check past that point if not you go backwards.

Doing what badass67 said doesn't sound like a bad idea but be sure to have a fire extinguisher close by.

If you have gas all the way to the carburetor, spin it a few times. Then go around to the front of the engine & pull the throttle all the way open a few times by hand. You should see it spraying out. You may need to repair/replace your Roachester.

OK you have fuel to the carb. you could have gotten junk from the line and blocked the jets or messed the float needles. Gas in the carb could not have gotten to the fuel line from dumping it down the barrels. gas in the line and carb normally means the pump is working, It doesn't mean it is totally good (pressure could be low at high speed causing a lean condition) but you should be able to start with it.

Thanks guys, well I will try to get it to start again tomorrow, I don't think I need a new carb as it was working just fine before I had to replace the line.

You didn't say what carb was on there? If it is a Qjet check the filter in the front maybe its blocked or crushed. If its an Edelbrock square bore get a gasket and pop the top. Did you change the line for looks or was there a problem with it?"
