RPMs revin high

Ok. Picked up the new truck tonight and had a little trouble with the rpms. When I first ran it down the road I was goin 55 and the rpms were at about 2500-3000k. Got gas and I jumped on the highway and goin 60 it was close to 4500 about to be in the redline. Brought it back down to 50-55 and it was screaming at 4k. Anyone know what might be causing this? It's got the TH400 with no o/d, and in fact now that I think about it I don't think I even remember 3rd kickin in. The p/o said before I picked it up that he was replacin the gasket and somethin else on the tranny, sorry forget what.

It is the 79 with the 350. Haven't checked gears yet. The shift indicator needle is missin but I knew I was in drive. Remember cause I accidentally had it in nuetral when I was leavin the gas station. Whatever it was it had the truck runnin hard. Smelled somethin burnin, pulled over to give it a rest and it went away.

Oh damn. He told me to call him today if I had any questions and I'll ask what exactly it was he had replaced on the tranny and get back to you guys. But since I'm definitely not experienced enough to do it, how much would you guess it might cost to have a shop rebuild it? I just hope it don't give out for next two weeks till I get next paycheck.

Here's a little table just so you get an idea of what OD is worth...what the TH400 doesn't have.

RPM: 2800; Trans: 1-1; axle: 4.10-1; speed: 60.92 MPH
RPM: 2800; Trans: 1-1; axle: 3.73-1; speed: 66.96 MPH
RPM: 2800; Trans: 1-1; axle: 3.55-1; speed: 70 MPH

all with an assumed 30" tire.
