rochester quadrajunk?

it is on a 1979 305 that is actually in an elcamino but should not be any different than a truck i am assuming. this piece of crap that has been dubbed a carburetor will not work worth a crap, we rebuilt it about a week ago and we cannot get it tuned it has been running like crap and today it wont even start and backfires really bad through the tailpipes and everyonce in a while through the carb but not very much i dont know what to do but i am thinking of putting a new carb on this thing anyways as we have been talking about it for a long time but i would still like to be educated on these carbs.

A quality rebuild is worth it IMO. My truck will literally run on it's side and the only reason it died was becasue i had so little gas in the tank the pick-up was no longer submerged. Mine was rebuilt by Jet Performance. Definately worth it.

Here us the link to the video in case you don't believe me.

Dude you have more than a carb problem listen to your engine back firing and also coming through the carb. the carb may be bad but sounds like you got bigger problems than the carb 305's are famous for bad cams. timing

i am having a hard time beleiving that it could be a cam problem as the engine has less than 5000 miles on it and the transmission less than 500 both rebuilt and installed by shops but i will run that by my dad.

Then have your quad rebuilt by a GOOD shop and see what happens.

get some books, these carbs get a bad rap because they're a little tricky to tune, so most people automatically think they're junk, when in fact it is their own lack of knowledge that causes the vehicle to run bad.

Old saw: 90% of carburetor problems are in the ignition.

sounds like either a ignition problem or float set 2 high or booth if the float is set 2 hight it will suck up in the 4 barrel ventura and cause it to sound like it has a massave cam in it and then it starts the poping process where the plugs are getting raw fuel dripping on them

I was having the same problem with a junk Holley carb. What did I do? Bought a Edelbrock, did it fix the problem? NO! I set the timing right and not one more backfire.

Could be the carb, but it wouldnt hurt to check the timing.

If you need another one rebuilt take over to Hudson Oaks. In Diamond Oaks housing development there is a man by the name of Larry Wells. He is supposably the best there is when it comes to Quadrajets. People ship them to him from all over the US. His company is Wells Speed Equipment. He is at 312 Diamond Oaks Drive and is number is 599-3600. I have used him several times and he is good.
