Name this part? Also, speedo questions (not the underwear)
What is the name of the gear inside the tranny that your speedo cable hooks up to? I need a new one ...
My truck came with a 60" speedo cable sheath. It seems to be stretched awful tight. Would I have any problems using a longer sheath - like a 66" - with a 66" speedo cable?

Speedometer Gear
Your cable is tight because the transmission in your truck was swapped out for a 69-up version. The 67/68 3 speed tranny is shorter. You need to get a cable that will work on the longer tailshaft transmission, Since that tranny is the same length (bellhousing to slip yolk) as the stock TH350 auto tranny, get a used one off a automatic equiped truck, or buy new for that application

What kind of parts store sells a speedometer gear? The local Discount Zone stores keep redirecting me to transmission shops. Transmission shops redirect me to the auto parts store. Someone at a tranny shop tried to tell me I was looking for a "spider gear", which I thought was incorrect (hence why I started this thread).
Thanks, yet again CPNE

I've had them made at the calibration shop. That way, everything is right. Avoids tickets with new toys (well, maybe).

speedometer driven gear. If your speedometer is correct, remove the gear and take it to a dealership and they should be able to help you out.

I've only had luck at the GM dealer obtaining the gears... And they're not out of site, around $7-10$ each... The gear that is attached to the output shaft is the Drive gear and the other is the Driven, which is the one that the speedo cable slips into. To calculate what you need based on your rear axle ratio and tire size use the calculators at:
http://www.tciauto.com/tech_info/speedo_gears.htm good luck!

Thanks, guys! Now I have the pleasure of finding out the gear ratio on the truck, I guess. I honestly have no clue. Just got it. I don't even know how many bolts
