What is this called? A breather filter?
What is the correct name for this filter?
It was installed on the passenger's side valve cover. The molded hose connected it to a curved metal tube and then into the air filter housing. The hose is cut, and when I went to pull the hose off, I noticed the filter is gunked up inside and I want to replace it, too. I would just rather look like a moron here, than at the parts counter. Thanks

No pic! X's
Its a crank case vent(pcv) it takes the vapors and returns them to the carb to burn |

I moved the pic. Should show up now. I got the PCV out of the other side, the driver's valve cover. It was gunked up bad, too.
But this vented back to the air cleaner, not the carb. Dunno. Hope the pic helps. BTW, you wanna mave down to Austin Texas and get my struck straightened out for me?

That looks like the tube that goes from the valve cover to the spacer/stack that sits between the carb and intake on my truck.
I took mine off and put a shiny edelbrock breather cap on my valve cover and taped off the hole in the air filter stack. I didn't figure it would mess anything up.

I believe that screen in there is actually a flame arrester. It would keep the oil in the crankcase from catching fire when a carb back fires. If it is plugged you can clean it and put it back in.

Thanks for all of the info, guys. I'm going to try and clean it up. It looks to be full of oily crud. So we shall see how well it works.

Is that tube actually necessary?

I would be the last person on earth to know if it is neccessary. I'll either put it back or find a suitable replacement, because it was there.
As if you can't tell by the type of questions I ask around here, I don't know much of anything about these trucks and I don't want to cause myself any hassles by leaving something off. But I can easily be convince otherwise... |

pvc tube
It's there to let the engine crankcase vapors be drawn into the engine and reburned. If you just stick a breather in the valve cover it will vent the vapors into the underhood area. It's an emissions thing and won't hurt anything as long as you plug the end in the carb spacer. If you have emissions testing in your state they will fail you if they see it. It may not be that critical on that old a vehicle.
