700R4 on a 235 engine?

I have a 54 chevy pickup truck with the original 235 engine and the 3 speed tranny. I was wanting to change the tranny to a 700R4 or a T3500/400. I know I need somje sort of adaptor plate to do this but the only one I have found is $350. For that kind of money I could just do a complete engine swap. I want to keep the 6 in it if I can, but is there any cheaper way to do this besides buying a $350 plate?
Thanks,
Jamie

No way I know of doing this without an adapter plate.Maybe you can build one to work.
