First post.............first GMC 4x4
I have spent several days reading posts on this sight. You guys seem very helpful and knowledgable, that is refreshing. I recently picked up a project truck and I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it. I have got a lot of ideas from this forum and the wife is rolling her eyes as I share them with her. Last night she said "If you are spending all that money why not just buy a new one". SHE JUST DOESN"T GET IT. Anyway, I found a 1984 GMC Sierrra SWB 4x4, 350 automatic. Loaded, the guy drove it everyday for the last 5 years I have known him. $800................. I will try to attach pictues. The motor will be out by the weekend, need to work on a sticky valve and several oil leaks.

Yes I thought so too. A/C works good, 4x4 works good, tilt, cruise and new tires. Brakes are new, a new drivers side gas tank. The left still has a leak. power windows work but are slow. It has had the 305 swapped out with a newer 350, more to come on the specs. It has the automatic with OD note sure what it is yet. Still learning about GMC, the last one I had was a 76 3/4 Chevy 2wd.

My original thought was to use it around the place to pull stumps and haul trash..........after looking it over that is not going to happen. It will never be my daily driver but I will be making some engine upgrades. A slight lift and some new tires and wheels. The paint looks good until you look at the hood, not sure how I will handle that.

Yel, go ahead and rub it in. I never find a bargan like that here. Just a set of good tires almost cost close to what you paid for the truck. I was looking at some the other day and over $600.00.

Oh, did I mention the tilt air and cruise all work. Gages all work including the clock. Came with the tool box and was full of extra tune-up items. Also had a Chiltons and Haynes Book. The interior will need some work, mostly on the doors.......4 wheel drive works great as well. I will not rub it any more but I will keep you updated with pics. I will have the motor out the w/e and will have many questions. Thanks in advance.

That is a very clean truck. You got a very good deal. I hope you enjoy it. Good luck on your repairs. I wish I could find a 4x4 for that price......

you stole that truck!
if it's a 4 speed auto OD it's a 700R4, dont put too big of a motor in it, those transmissions suck. Swap a TH400 or 350 in it if you dont mind losing OD. |

However, I don't think your statement is accurate today. They can be rebuilt these days by someone who knows what they are doing and they will hold up. I have heard that certain years are preferrable to others. I have gone the other way now and swapped a 700r4 into my 76' in place of the TH350. Actually, from what I have heard its getting hard to find the 4x4 version of the 700r4. All the more reason he got a hell of a deal on this truck. |

I am not familiar with the trim packages on the GMC. I believe this is a Sierra Classic, I will confirm that when I get home. I live in the Fort Walton Beach area (lately referred to as Hurricane alley). I will have the motor out this w/e end and then I will confirm which engine and tranny it has. The VIN says 305 but I was told it has a 350 and the Valve covers say 350. I won't build the motor up much at this time I am just looking for a nice truck that will hold it's own off road.
