I want get some good info on a carb

I have a 454 bored .40 over, Port and Polished, 3" headers and 3" flowmasters, etc. What carb would you put on it if you had to get a new one? As of right now I have a 600 cfm edelbrock or a 1406 edelbrock, no choke. Is that too little as some have told me or is it good enough?
PLease let me know.

Im not going to tell you what brand. Size should be for what you wont to do with your engine. If you want gas miles stay with what you have. For HP use what the cam company said to use. I would think around 750 or 850cfm and higher if your cam will take it. Matt

1406 Edelbrocks run on the lean side for most 350s let alone a 454. 600 Cfm will work but you will need to have to jetted to suit your 454.

I'll say it No a 1406 or 1405 will not feed a 454. You need to get at least a 750 if you plan on using the edelcraps. With a Holley you can get away with a small carb on a big engine but I wont go into a page of details on why..................today anyway.

Sell those carbs and get a 750cfm carb.

are you capable of adjusting carbs i can a little but not much so i asked an educated mechanic and friend to assist in installation and first setting, he also showed and explained what to do if need be. hope this helps and didnt affend your abilities but by the post i assumed (made an ass out of you and me!)

i just read your profile i roflmao at myself your a mechanic why did you have a 600cfm on a beast (where you scared of it?) i would prolly kill myself if i had a 454 in my truck

750 edelbrock will work nicely.

Under certain situations it's avantatious to have a smaller carb but you live in Tulsa Ok, If i'm not mistaken your altitude is right around sea level. Plenty of air to use a 750 on a SB, of course I doubt it would see all 750 CFM of flow. A 750 on the setup you have now will be a tad on the lean side but in a safe jetable range.

If you were to use a 600 CFM Holley theres patches to get around running lean on the fuel side of things durring tip in (initial take off or light acceleration) Bigger acc pump, larger acc cam and gotta love a power valve for every vacuum level. So the Holley would be capable of flowing the fuel needed at the right time to run on a larger engine. Thats why HD GM BB's and fNord 429's, 460's came with 600-625cfm Holleys from the factory. Of course this small carb limited the potential RPM range for better or worse.

AFB's can be modified to work in these situations but it's a hassle and it will not come close to working like a holley would under the same circumstances. You will be cruising with all 4 holes cracked open durring most light accelration because the AFB design will not flow the same amount of fuel in the primaries a holley setup to run on a BB will.

Either way neither 600cfm carb will move the air needed to spin the BB to it's potential.
