auto transmission for a 1966
I have a 1966 Chevy LWB with the original 6cyl engine
Has a 3 on the tree. I need to know what auto trans will bolt up and also what to do about the steering wheel. I want to keep the 6 cyl in the truck. Also would like to put power steering and disc brakes on this truck. Any help will be appreciated. |

welcome wilson oklahome. For power steering and disk brakes fine a 73-89 (to 91 on sub) crossmember it bolts in just 4 holes to drill easy. then buy a rez ps adapter. hope that helps

The powerglide would have been the original trans. I think a TH350 would bolt up, as well. For the steering wheel, I think you should go with one of those welded-chain jobbies

I was wondering if a 700r4 or some type of overdrive trans would bolt up to these 6 cyl motors.
Also meant to say steering column instead of steering wheel in my first post. Thanks for all the replys |

My first truck was a 66 GMC with a 250 inline and a three speed. I did the power steering and power brake conversion it 20 years ago. Back then they didnt have the PS box adapter back then, so that will make it easier. I used a power steering pump from a mid seventies nova. It all bolted right on, but dont forget to grab the alternator mount that bolts to the block, its a little different. the back of a 230, 250, 292 block is the same as a small block chev, so all smallblock trannys will work. The 65 that Im doing now is getting an automatic, (TH400). I used a powerglide column, rebuilt it and got the parts from shiftworks to convert the indicator to a three speed trany, they make one for a 700R4 too. Check it out.

I think a 700r4 will work, but you will have some minor things to overcome. One is, you will need a vacuum over electric switch. Summit has them or you can rob one off of a salvage truck. Second, there is a brake switch that disengages the lock-up or something when you hit the brakes. That too can be had from a salvage yard. Also, the 700r4 has a different type of kickdown cable. hope that helps.
