350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

Hey Everyone I need some advice. I just installed a 350 and R4 700 in my 72 Chev pu 2wd stock 250 6cyl with three in the tree. I used stock V8 motor mounts in the holes drilled in the frame to match and it seems that the engine is too far forward. Unfortunately I do not have pictures but it is approx 4-5 inches from the firewall and so close to my new 4 core rad that I will have to put electric fans if I keep it in the present location. The drive shaft fits nicely but I don't want to throw the geometry off too much. Any mbrs with advice or past experience?

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

I may have to re submit this thread with pics on the week-end because I am going back to work on it. Right now I am about 4 hours away from my garage...unfortunatrly I have to work when I would rather be working on my truck!

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

Where in canada are you ?

Are you using a long water pump ? That would be my guess as to where your problems started. If the motor mounts were 6 cyl frame mounts that shoulf set the motor back farther than stock. If you get a short water pump you will be able to use the stock fan. Unless you want electric fans.

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

I am living in Edmonton but the truck is in Saskatoon.

I am using a long water pump. I am sure it will fit if I use electric fans but I am not sure if I am going to run into any other problems having the engine further forward. I don't understand how this could have happened in the first place. I was sure that if I put the V8 engine mounts onto the pre drilled holes in the frame that the engine would have been in the right position. Weird....

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

I hear you....

I will re post this thread after I get some pics this week-end.

But until then is there anyone out there that has done the swap from a 250 to a 350 that has run into this problem? Or a mechanic that would know whether there will be any issues with an engine position that is further forward then usual? (other then fan clearance)

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

Below pics are of the drivers side - The first pic is the 2wd V8 in the correct postion, second pic is same mount in the rear 6 banger or 4WD position, as you can see, the bottom bolt won't line up with anything if its in the wrong position. Hope that helps.....

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

I have the engine towers in the correct position(front holes) with long pump, clutch fan and four core rad. and I have 2 1/2" between clutch and rad. Probably a little less from the fan. I did shorten the shroud by 1 1/4" john

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

If you have the engine in the front set of holes, it is indeed in the correct position. You just have to remember, these trucks used short water pump through 72. If you want it "correct", you're going to have to swap your long pump stuff for short pump stuff.

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

Thx guys,

It appears as though I have the mounts in the correct location but the distributor is quite far from the firewall. This is really puzzeling to me. I will get some pics uploaded ASAP.

Short water pump sounds fine.... Do you guys forsee any issues with the engine being further ahead on the front axle? The harmonic balancer on my brothers 70 shortbox is inline with the drag bar and mine is about an 1.5-2 inches forward of that.

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

So, you can't run a long water pump setup on these things without using an electric fan?

I just read John's reply, and it sounds like he is using a long pump setup without any problems.

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

A long pump setup works fine if you mount the engine in the rear set of holes, like a 6 cylinder was originally.

Just a thought, but are the engine mount towers reversed? Does the one you have on the driver's side belong on the passenger side, and vice versa?

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

For me they only fit in the holes one way so I don't think so...

But nothing would surprise me now...

Thx Kurtis

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

You absolutely can not mount those stand bas ackwards, & get them to fit all 3 factory holes(as already mentioned). you need the short waterpump & pulleys/ect to get the fan in the proper spot. Yes, sb V8 position does put the dist a long way from the firewall! I like to mount my sb v8's in the I 6 (250) spot......or same as the 4wd. A small cap dist works best for the swap, although the HEI will fit. where you are right now, I wouldnt move the eng......just get the proper pcs on front L

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

My 67 GMC was a V6. When I put the 350 in it, I tried to use the factory frame holes but the one-piece drive shaft is too short, and Th 400 mounts wouldn’t line up. I bolted the tranny in place with the drive shaft, bolted the engine to the tranny, and then drilled new holes for the engine stands. Using an early points distributor, I can’t quite get two fingers between the firewall and distributor cap.

He's using 73-87 engine mounts in that picture. The engine is mounted further back than "correct" 67-72 SBC mounting.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure what they did, who ever changed this from a 6 to 8.

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

There appears to be a number of different mounts, brackets and mounting hole combos that will work on these trucks to locate the engine in the desired position. Most recent is Palf's newest purchase using the 73-87 engine mounts. First I've seen of that combo.
My setup on the 69 is 67-72 small block brackets bolted in the front set of frame holes and the t350 mount bolts right up to the trans crossmember in the stock location. The driveshaft was the wrong length however ( truck was originally 6 cyl/ 3 speed ) so I had to buy another one.
The Dynomax headers didn't fit without massaging, a good bit. The left side wouldn't clear the lower control arm frame bracket and the right side wouldn't clear the engine mount tower. Looked like the engine needed to go in the rear set of holes but that would require drilling new holes for the trans xmember and a shorter drive shaft. I give up. I'm going with some renewed rams horn manifolds. It'll give me more working room in there anyway. I bought a set a while back.
As far as the 73 up front mount accessories on mine it has plenty of room between the fan clutch/blades and the 4 row radiator.
