Swapping in 3/4 ton axles
I've got a 72 3/4 ton 4x4 pickup and am thinking about swapping the axles into the 71 Jimmy.
Anybody ever try this? Is it a direct bolt in or would some fabrication be required? Ron

Should bolt rite in. Your high gearing might not be as good. HO72 4.10 at best.

Re: Swapping in 3/4 ton axles
Our years are a direct interchange. All of the 73+ fronts are direct as well. 73+ rears need the spring perches moved. I have a 73+ FF 14 bolt in mine.

Thanks! Now I just have to decide if I want to do it.

Re: Swapping in 3/4 ton axles
IF your going to be running big tires and going off-road a lot, go for it. You may have to make a different driveline (someone correct me if I'm wrong), but everything else should be straight forward. There are a ton of guys on CK5.com running 3/4 & 1 ton gear.

Re: Swapping in 3/4 ton axles
The Brake components may also need to be changed, i.e. the Master Cylinder and the proportioning valve. There is a significant weight difference and clearance difference between a 12 bolt and a 14 bolt. If you don't care about that then you will be hard pressed to destroy the 3/4 ton equipment. I would do it if it were me.
