Where to buy wiring harness??

Well, I was wondering whether or not I should replace my haggard and hacked original wiring harness, and today a large cloud of smoke coming out of my fuse box let me know that I should. The only problem is I have no idea what kit to get, and also no idea where to buy one. I know I do not want EZ Wire, as I've seen too many of those burn up/fall apart. Here's the stats on my truck, which may help in determining which kit I need. I've heard painless mentioned a lot, but have no clue who to buy one off. I'm in Canada, but will order from down south if they will ship here.

72 chevy
-Van tilt w/ just wires (no terminal on end)
-HEI
-Edelbrock carb w/electric choke
-Aftermarket air conditioning (haven't bought yet, but will)
-In dash CD player, speakers in doors
-Autometer electric gauges (6 gauge streetrod set)

I think thats about it that varies from stock in terms of wiring and electrical. I'll need wires and a fuse box for sure (mines a bit melted now.....). Thanks!

Re: Where to buy wiring harness??

It is a 1972 custom deluxe 10

It is NOT a factory AC truck, but will be getting a vintage air or old air system.

It IS a factory gauge truck (no tach though) but it will be getting replaced with autometer electric speedo, tach, temp, volt, fuel, oil.

It IS a factory 350 V8 truck, but that has been replaced with a 350 out of an 80's suburban with HEI, and the Q-jet will be replaced with an edelbrock performer 600cfm electric choke.

Re: Where to buy wiring harness??

I got a painless wiring harness a few years back. I think I got the 18 circuit one for add ons later. It didn't include new AC wiring, but that should come with your vintage air setup anyways.

It wasn't real hard to wire, but it did take quite a bit of time.

The kit comes with the instructions to wire up the HEI, and it has an elec. choke wire too.

I got mine from Pace Performance parts or something like that, they beat out summit and jegs on price at the time.

On a side note, I also put in a fuel injected 350 and I also used a painless kit on that.

Re: Where to buy wiring harness??

I used the painless kit also but the kit does not have everything at least in my opinion... Heres a list of what I think it should have included but did not..
column harness
taillight harness

and some of the directions are pretty vauge but all in all it is a great kit also did not like the fact that I had to cut the fire wall and weld up the hole where the taillight harness went through the fire wall from the factory...

Re: Where to buy wiring harness??

this is good info for me as well. I was considering going with Painless. I found Autozone can order it. I did email Painless several times with questions and recommendations and they were ver helpful. I think I will go back and ask about the col and tail lights.

Re: Where to buy wiring harness??

The Gem streetrods kit looks very reasonable. Does it come with the factory correct connectors for everything?.

Re: Where to buy wiring harness??

That GEM kit looks like an EZ wire kit, which I don't want. The price is right, and I've heard a few people who've had no problems with EZ wire, but I'm not willing to take the chance.

It looks like painless kit # 10206 is the way to go, and someone said Jegs sell em for $310 or something like that. Is that the best price out there at the moment?

Re: Where to buy wiring harness??

Hi Muddpile: If I remember right I think you live in the Yorkton area. Anyway in Saskatoon their is business called "Totally Wired" and their specialty is electrical on vehicles. They are always at the dragstrip and I know they sponsored a cop friend of mines 70 Duster Drag Car that was painted up like an RCMP cruiser complete with lightbar. Anyway their phone # and address in Saskatoon are 978-0006 and #4 630 45st West.. They might even have a kit for you. Let me know how you make if you check with them.

Re: Where to buy wiring harness??

I'm actually closer to saskatoon than yorkton, about 1 1/2 hours from stoon, 2 from yorkton. I'll have to give that place a call and see what they have. I know the duster your talking about, they have it at Draggins pretty well every year. Thanks for the help and I'll let ya know what I find out.

Re: Where to buy wiring harness??

Just to throw out another name .... I have a Ron Francis set-up in my '67ride. I asked a few ? and Ron himself answered. I like the wire and the way its marked. I just ordered their LED stop, turn and tail lite set-up but haven't got it all in yet. Again they were helpful on the phone. Just my 2 cents. Good luck ....you'll NEVER be sorry for getting rid of all of the electrical bugs in the original wire.

Re: Where to buy wiring harness??

I too installed the Painless TPI harness and it worked good. I also have a Painless 67-72 harness, but I'm not to sure if I'm going to use it or not. If I do, I'll keep ya posted.

Deuce,

If you decide not to use the harness I may be interested. Let me know.
