Re: how to lock the spider gears

Are you just going to weld them? Sorry, I can't help you with a "how to" but I have heard of some bad experiences doing this. If you have tires with reasonable grip and you are planning on driving on pavement you will probably end up snapping axles. If you are only going to be on gravel or offroad you should be ok.

My buddy watched a guy take his truck into a shop to have the spider gears welded because he was on his way to a rock crawling competition. He only had three turns to make before he could just cruise in a straight line to the competition. He got it welded, tried to get out of town, broke an axle, went back, fixed it, tried again, broke an axle, went back, fixed it, tried again. Third time was the charm and he actually made it.

I have never heard any happy endings by doing this. If you hammer down on it on an uneven surface, you risk tearing up for diff and axles. There should be some aftermark traction-lock type diffs available for a GM 10 bolt that will do what you want it to.

Re: how to lock the spider gears

Mini spool would be ideal for a pourpose built straight line or wide corner setup like the roundy round cars. A lincoln locker will ruin the diff for any future use.

Re: how to lock the spider gears

Yea mini spool for about 100 bucks from summit. It replaces the spider gears with splined ends, and 2 center chunks that the pin goes thru. I've heard of alot of people welding them up but I do not know how were or exact what you weld to what.

My monte carlo had a mini spool and the end resutl was pure carnage. it would not turn anything. Here's some pictures of it, and to show you the mini spool. 1st. pic is a good comparison to the spider gear one, lower right and spool setup, upper left.

I think they are a hundred bucks, maybe cheaper.

A guy I worked with welded his. All the wheel studs broke off on one wheel the first time he drove it.

Yea nice pics You can see the cause of faulire wasent related to the spool though. See the carrier and the nice tooth marks in it. Thats what happens when the pinion nut backs off gets kinda messy as shown.

Re: how to lock the spider gears

Yea but I beleive the ring gear damage was caused by that AND the spool because he tried driving the car on the street with it. I had a straight shot and wide swing and almost never made it in my carport with that in there.
