Re: new stereo
I built an aluminum plate that I attached the radio cage to and bolted into the truck. It's exceptionally sturdy, and the finished product has a very custom look to it without being flashy or distracting.

Re: new stereo
I just used the cage that came with the deck to mark where I needed to cut, then taped where I had marked, then cut it out with a dremmel. The hole was the right size for the cage, so it stays in fine without anything extra.

Re: new stereo
I cut out the metal part of the dash to take the DIN size radio and then created a plate to fit the plastic dash shape and size (around the radio hole). I then mounted the DIN basket to the plate and slid the radio into the dash through the plastic bezel. The plate is then screwed to the bezel/dash combination to hold it all together. I have an Alpine CD radio and an Alpine graphic equalizer mounted together in the same spot on the dash, there is room.

Re: new stereo
I made a template when I did it, but I have no idea where it is now. I just started big and took more material away until it fit. Start with a piece of cardboard and it won't take you any time at all to do the same procedure.

Re: new stereo
Something you might want to look into is using a dash pannel from a later truck. To me, it looks a little cleaner. I used a Crutchfield $12 plastic mounting bracket/support.

Re: new stereo
what year trucks used the 1.5 DIN radios? I wouldn't mind getting ahold of that type of panel.

Re: new stereo
ARAMP1...your given away all my ideas....lol. Tomorrow i'm removing one from a 89 burb at the boneyard...great thing is getting the radio out of a big hole is easier than doin the same in a 73-86 dash cut to take a din chassis when it comes to doing any work behind the bezel!

Agreed! Installation was a snap. There are some differences in the dashes though. I have the wiper control on the turn signal lever, so if your truck has the wiper control on the dash, you'll have to do some modifying. Last edited by ARAMP1; 02-16-2006 at 02:32 PM. |

Re: new stereo
Its only the 89 and later burbans that have the 1.5 din hole.

Re: new stereo
I just can't bring myself to cut up my dashboard I've thought about a rectractable box that drops down from below the dash then tucks away when you dont need it I will have to do some sketches and if i get anything figured out post it That semester of drafting at the votech may pay off after all
