Power Steering Fluid

This weekend, I checked the level of the power steering fluid. It's right up where it's supposed to be, but when I wiped the dip-stick, the oil was not pink, it was tan like engine oil? I haven't had to touch the PS fluid in the 2 years I've owned the truck, it was always full. Did the previous owner get confused about which fluid went where? Or is it a clear PS fluid that's burnt? Aside from a slight squeal when I turn it all the way to lock, the power steering hasn't given me any problems. I'm a little confused on this?

Re: Power Steering Fluid

Well you will know if its burn right away by the smell of it. If its not burnt its likely doing its job weather its the right oil or not. I'd drain it and put some decent quality hyd or PS oil in if the age of the stuff is in question.

Re: Power Steering Fluid

You're fine. If you want to change out your power steering fluid every few years, a turkey baster is just the ticket. Suck the old stuff out of the reservior and pour the new in. It's that simple!
