6 or 12 volts

Hello i'm new to the forum,i just got a 56 3/4 ton that was completly disassembled and as i'm going through the parts the cluster still has the wiring attached to it with the ignition switch. it came w/o a motor or trans, but the switch doesn't have a start detent it just seems to be on or off.i figure i can just get a 56 car switch and run an extra wire.my ? is are these trucks 6 or 12 volts as i'd like to use the original gas gauge and don't want to ruin any thing. this is going to be a big project and the wiring is a long way off but i'm curious.hopefully some pics will follow as it progresses thanks ,bud

Re: 6 or 12 volts

12 volts. The truck had a floor push starter in it originally. The only way to use that switch with a modern starter, would be to wire to a push button switch, then to the solenoid.

Good luck, and welcome aboard!

Re: 6 or 12 volts

Welcome to the board.

Its 12 volt with a pedal starter the switch is on, off, and maybe acc. push the pedal to start. You can get a key switch for the starter on what ever engine you get. I used the original gages in my 58 and you can still get replacements for the ones that are broken. keep us updated

Re: 6 or 12 volts

You can buy a new switch from any of the after market venders like, Bothers Trucks or LMC.
