Lightbulb Crazy idea i have had for a while

this idea seems out there to me but i have been thinking about it for a while. I did a picture down below to give you an idea. Do you think it could work?? Would it be to much bends and restriction? That is just one side by the way. So whatt do you think?? I liked it better then running a pipe out the side because it makes it more steathy looking. Sorry for the fancey writting my paint program has a glitch. Vasically i think it would be sweet to open it up at car shows and just drving around some times. I am also thinking it could mess with my carb a little bit but am not sure.

Thanks Alot!!!!!!!!

Re: Crazy idea i have had for a while

I can't think of any reason why it shouldn't work... The exhaust won't try and flow back up the pipe if it is going through the cat / mufflers, but certainly would have some real snap when you opened it up and bypassed the muffler!

I,m shure someone out there has allready done it as russ said it will back flow to the s/o valve maybe theres a one way exhaust check valve out there you could install at the back side of the muff. cuz your only suppose to flow one way through the cat.

Re: Crazy idea i have had for a while

I was watching an episode of Muscle Car. It was the one where he was fabbing the exhaust for the sleeper Nova. He put an elec. exhaust cutout before the muffler. He added a simple turndown tube to the exhaust cutout. It would be sorta looud, but you will feel a big difference with setup you got under your hood. It would have a stealth appearance, until you actually look under the truck. You might find a write up of the install on the Muscle Car website.

Re: Crazy idea i have had for a while

Other than it being a lot of trouble for no reason it would work. I just don't understand why. If you want an open exhaust for performance, why not just open it up and let it dump...

I agree with Ken.

Besides, that would look like hell under the truck...and might be a nightmare to make fit with the gas tank(s), E-brake cables, etc getting in the way.

If you do it, just do a dump in front of the muffler.

Re: Crazy idea i have had for a while

Put a set of dumps just before the cat, and dump the exhaust. My mustang has a set with a cable operated butterfly valve. So when I am at the track, I pull on the cord, and dump the exhaust, and close it when in town, or down the return lane

All that tubing would take up to much room, and be a waste of materials

I too agree. Just open it and let it dump as said.

Re: Crazy idea i have had for a while

Friend of mine in MA (greatest state in the union ) had a set of electric cutouts like this on his 96 Z28. They had a valve in front of the mufflers and a straight pipe bypass so that both exhausts left through the same rear tips.

With the valve closed, the stock mufflers kept things quiet. With it open, the car was loud. It worked well at first.

Only problem was MA road salt and grime got up in the valve and before long, the wiring and valve rusted away. He eventually just went to an SLP setup.

I have cherry bombs on my truck and while loud, they are quiet when not flooring the pedal. Not quite sure what the neighbors think, though

Re: Crazy idea i have had for a while

There was a magazine write up on a guy that had a 69 AMX that had a dual exhaust setup the 3" pipes were open W/O mufflers and the 2 1/4" bypass pipes had an orficed opening to cut the sound down for driving on a city street. It was set up in alignment with your drawiing and the article stated that it worked quite well.

Re: Crazy idea i have had for a while

I used to run my Grand National with the dump tube opened all the time and never got hassled for it. I agree with the others.....just dump it.....true the GN was a lot quieter than a V8 will be haha

Re: Crazy idea i have had for a while

okayi get what you guys are saying....

84, i did seee that episode (only tv i have watched in weeks) and liked what he did with it. I am conserned about the heat thatwould be under the truck as well as the moisture created by the exhaust.

N2,86swb,bigblock73, I know what your talking about and that could allow me to keep my current "fake dual" set up. only thing is i would have one dump not too. do you think it wuld sound bad because i have a dang Y pipe still? Also i still gotta make sure the3 Exhaust shop will let me do it.

Thanks every one else for all the insight. Also I don't drive my truck in the MA salt months. The state is high on Salt during the winter and they think the more they can dump the better the roads will be for the people that go 80 in the snow storms......

here is the second drawing acording to the input yall gave. Also right now i need to have my rear pipes space apart so o can fit a sqaure reciver hitch. Thanks again!

On my '86 GN I did the same thing, just not all the time. But the turbo was ear-splittingly loud. I just couldn't take it.
I actually didn't notice a difference power-wise. Maybe if I would have taken it to the track or some top-end runs on the freeway, but not driving around town.

Funny this was the first day I drove it to work like that, when I came back from lunch the maintenence guys all came out to see what was wrong with it. What did I break that was making so much noise. They all assumed I had blown the turbo or something. No matter what I told them they refused to believe a v6 could even compete with any v8. Even after taking the one guy for a hot-lap around the block getting sideways shifting from first to second then burning the tires going into third. His brothers "sweet Monty SS" would still blow any v6 away.
The un-educated?

Re: Crazy idea i have had for a while

I did something rather similar on my Chevelle recently. My exhaust goes straight back true-dual off the headers, then bends and exits infront of the rear tires. Right before the bend are the mufflers, and about a foot before the mufflers I put a Y-pipe with electric exhaust cutouts. I like it alot, can have a nive deep rumble (flowmaster delta 50's) with the cut-outs closed, or open them up and wake up the neighbourhood.
