Swapping differentials from an 89??

I have a guy at work that has an 89 suburban 4x4 that he said has a burned up 700R4 and he just wants to get it out of his drive way. He says it's a heavy half ton and has a posi rear end that he just spend $1400.00 dollars on rebuilding (just before his tranny went out). Has anyone every swapped out their diffs with something of this model year? If so what things need to be done to make it work? Thanks for any advice

Jim

its a half ton suburban, you're going to want to pass on it as its got an 8.5" 10 bolt out back. G80s in these are garbage, and the 8.5" ring gear is the smallest GM has ever put into a fullsize truck. i broke the one in my 91 on bald 30" tires, and dry pavement with normal driving.

you're actually probably better off with whatever came stock in your truck.

If I remember correctly, the spring perches would need re welded to the proper location, the springs are mounted different(IIRC) than from a 67-72,the bottom line is,you will either have to pay someone to weld them,or if you are good with one, weld them yourself.

Yes, there is no advantage whatsoever to swapping newer half ton axles under yours unless you want to get away from drum brakes up front (but since you already have discs....)

I'd pass.
