Did they ever put a NP-203 in a early Blazer?

I was looking at a 1971-72 Blazer that other day that I am considering buying. Someone has stuffed a 454 under the hood, but it looked like a Turbo 350/NP-203 transfer case combo behind it. I thought that all the Blazers of this vintage had the 205. then again, this might have been a 6 cylinder truck at one time also, if that makes a difference. I am thinking that it may have been a 4 speed originally because there was an after market floor shifter in it and not the column shift that I would expect to see with an auto. I have a couple of other engine/trans combo that I would like to put in it, but I was wondering if this was in any way original. This Blazer is nice enough that I would be willing to sell my current 1970 Blazer to get it.

Re: Did they ever put a NP-203 in a early Blazer?

To my knowledge there was never a NP203 in the first generation K5. Somebody likely changed out the entire drivetrain when they put in the 454. Which by the way, there wasn't any factory big blocks in the 1st Gen K5s either. If you think it might have originaly been a manual tranny I would look for remains of clutch linkage. That is usaully a dead givaway...pedal under the floormat, pivot bracket still attached to the frame under the steering colum...etc.

As Critter stated, sounds like the whole drive train was swapped out for something from a 73 & up.

Your correct about the 205, that's the only T-case our years used.

Have you driven this one yet?

A lot of '69 - '72 Blazers and Jimmys came with Dana 20 transfer cases (so the 205 was not the only case), but no NP203s until '73.

Yep, true...my bad.

I thought the 20's were only in the 69/70's, didn't realize they came in the 71/72 models which the inquirey was about.

Good to know.

Re: Did they ever put a NP-203 in a early Blazer?

I was 99% sure that was the case (or transfer case). Come to think of it, the thing may be a 208. I really did not spend to much time looking at the drive terrain, I was really trying to check out the body for rust, since we all know what a problem that can be. I did not get a chance to drive it, but I could if I wanted. Thanks for the answers guys. !!!!!

Thanks for the picture, I also have the a 205 under my 1970 Blazer with a Turbo 400. I know that one was not stock either, but it does have some nice trading value for what I want.

Re: Did they ever put a NP-203 in a early Blazer?

I know this is a different question, but since the three speed thing came up, was there ever a three speed with a floor mounted shifter. For that matter, was there ever a floor mounted auto shifter?

Re: Did they ever put a NP-203 in a early Blazer?

UPDATE

I got another chance to look this Blazer over, and this time really look at the transfer case. It is a NP205 which made me very happy with the Turbo 350. I was in such a rush to look at it with the rain coming down that I did not get a good look at it. It is indeed a original 4 speed truck, since it still had the clutch peddle hanging. I did not get to drive it though, the battery was dead from from setting and it need needs a good tune so it will start better. I think my 1970 Blazer is going up for sale so I can pick this one up .
