Rearend info
I got a 3.73 rearend from a friend. I am in the process of cleaning, painting, new seals, etc. and just realized that the rear drums are finned. Is this a 3/4 ton? They measure 2X11. If so do I need a 3/4 ton rebuild kit including springs, shoes, cylinder, etc. or will a 1/2 ton do? Main thing I am looking for is any differences that I might be missing.
Thanks, Danny PS Wes, help me if you can?!!! |

Update, I've found that my rearend also has a THC W234 code which is a 71 1/2T 3.73. Now all I have to figure is is if the finned drums are the orginal ones. I thought most of them were nonfinned?

Just finished installing the refurbished THC rear end in our 71 Burb (1/2 Ton) yesterday....as you state, 3.73 is the THC code and the "finned" drums are the original drums that came on the vehicle.....Pinion yoke seal is Timken # 8460N and axle seal(s) is Timken # 8835-S........each seal cost about $3.50 at our local Auto Zone. FYI: new wheel cylinders (although not Wagner-Lockheed brand) were only a few bucks more than the rebuild kits so you might consider checking the price difference where you are. Hope this helps!!!

Thanks for the reply. Your info was very helpful. The rearend I got did not have the axles and drums installed when I got it, but I think I got the right stuff now. Finned drums and all. I just got a little bit confused. 5 bolt drum-1/2T duh. Sometimes its hard to put the pieceds back together, if you didn't see them come apart! Thanks again, I'm back on track. Sure would like to see this baby rollin' Danny ![]() |
