broken wheel stud! quick help please.

Well one of my rusty old wheel studs finally gave way as I was removing the wheel. I have the rotor off and am going to put the nut back on and try to pound it out. Any advice???

I always just took and beat them out with a hammer, with or without a nut on them. Then got a good thick washer, or 2 sometimes, and a nut that fits the new stud good, usually bought a nute or two new just for the heck of it.

Put the stud through from the back, put on the washer(s) then a new nut and used the impact gun to draw the stud all the way through the hole.

Put some grease on the splines and threads of the new stud so it'll pull in easier. Check it for tightness a few times after you put it back on the road.

Ya, finally got it off. The problem I had was I only have a regular claw hammer and I had to go barrow a bigger one from a neighbor. Popped right out after that. Used the hammer to drive it back in half way and then pulled it through with a spacer and nut the rest of the way. Thanks guys. :metal

i always put the studs in the freezer before installing. they go in alot easier that way.

I love this place. Broke a stud off called the tire shop they wanted $45 and an hour to fix it. I had no idea how to fix it,looked it up here, 5 minutes later it's out and I'm on my way to auto zone to buy a new stud for $2.45. Thanks Guys

i knock them out with a hammer

and install them using a press

or using 2 washers an old pilot bearing and a lug nut with an impact....

Resurrecting an old thread because this place DOES rock!

Will hammering a broken wheel stud out work on a brake DRUM? I don't want to be the idiot that shatters his brake drum. Anyone?

yes it will, be sure to remove the drum first to expose the hub, hammer out the old and pull the new stud in. If its a rear stud you will have to have some sort of impact and the washers as stated above to re install the new stud.

No you won't break it. Thump em out with a big hammer.

The rear studs are pressed into the hub not the drum. You can't access the back of the hub to insert the new stud without pulling the drum off the lighter 5 & 6 Lug axles.

On eight lug 14bolt and Dana 70 full floating axles the hub rides on tapered roller bearings. You can damage the tapered bearings if you thump out the stud with the hub installed.
If the hub and drum separate great. The drum is HEAVY. Some are held together by all eight studs. IDK when GM started removable drums on these axles. My 1976 is one piece and my 2000 is two piece.
I usually pull the drum/hub off as one piece. It's similar to removing 2wd front discs... Except. The full float hub with drum is heavier than a dead horse and the hub nut uses a special tool to turn it.
I'd pull the bearings, before you start thumping on the stud, to keep em out of the dirt. Don't ask how i know the $3 grease seal won't hold them in. Repack em before you re-install.
