Switching Valve Problems

My truck has not been driven very much in the last month or two because of all of the work that I've been doing on it. Today I took it out on the road and I stopped and put gas in the right side tank. After leaving the station, I switched tanks over to the right side. The gauge for that tank went right on over to the full mark and everything was fine. After about two miles the truck acted as if it was giving out of gas, it completely stopped. I switched back over to the other tank and got it going again. I did this again on down the road aways and it did the same thing. Finally after about another 40-50 miles I tried switching it back again to the right tank and this time it seemed to be fine. What do you think could have been the problem. Admittedly the right side tank hasn't been used in quite a while (several months). Could the switching valve have been the problem.
