So it's like this:

I finally have my truck to a point where I want to start upgrading parts.

Here is what I have:

1962, 283, 350 auto, 2bbl carb, stock points distributor,alternator, everything else is stock,stock,stock...

I plan on keeping the 283 fo awhile, if not forever. My thoughts for the first few upgrades are an hei distributor and a set of headers....

Here's the catch: I don't have the tools to pull the enigine, so...

Will installing the hei unit and headers require pulling the engine?

Will these units fit without any modification?

Any other thoughts?

Well in order to put headers on the engine needs to be in the truck first. It i really hard to do with when the headers are on the engine outside the truck. The distributor will go in without the cap on. It will be a tight fit but should work.

For a bit more room putting the HEI in would it help jack up the rear of the tranny? This should just another 1/4 to 1/2" clearance for dropping it in. Somtimes this make all the differance in the world.

You dont have to do anything to put a hei in. If you get the type with built in coil, it will be a little tight for room. There are plenty of the smaller hei with external coils that work great.
