Reducing wheelhop

My GMC seems to like to bounce the back end quite a bit. Whenever the tires break loose, on accident or on purpose, it bounces awful. Tar, dirt, snow, doesn't really make a difference. But I was wondering how I could cut back on the wheelhop. J.C Whitney makes something you clamp on to your leaf spring that makes it so the truck won't bounce, because the device theoretically "prevents the spring from warping, or making an S-shape during wheelhop", but it looks to me like it would break. (Plus I'm not giving J.C Whitney any of my hard-earned money) Any info on some traction bar devices or something would help. Thanks for the info.

on an old camero i used a set of traction bars and stopped it (dont tell any one just replaced spings on my old furd snow plow truck) and it quit

I had the same problem on my 67. My aftermarket rear lift springs are way soft and it was so bad that I couldnt even back up going uphill. I built a traction bar for it and the problem went away. Same thing your gonna have to do. Either that or fork out the $$$ for new springs. Its alot cheaper building traction bars.

I built a axle truss and a traction bar all in one. In the past Ive built traction bars comming off of the axle tube. I went with the single traction bar this time because I wanted more flexabilty out of it then you would have with 2 traction bars coming off the axle tube. That, and I also wanted a axle truss. The traction system that you end up building will depend on your wheelbase, lift height, and your ability to fabricate. Either way, it will eliminate your wheel hop problems.

Higher rear end ratio would put the brakes on that problem Ya got to much torque

I can't believe how my K does that even with a little 250, compared to the C-10 with 3.73's the engine came out of. We had a stump to pull out acouple weeks ago, and being the lazy people me and my brother are, we attempted using the truck instead of going and getting one of our tractors. Hooked the chain on it and I had the truck out on the road..............Needless to say, we had a power hoping truck with 4 black marks Thought we broke it loose, backed up to get another line on it, and it did the same thing ...........Power hoping truck and 4 black marks.........It took a 125 hp tractor to remove it.

This is an option but you would have to contact Rancho to see if they still sell them. traction bars are probably the best. I have seen something like this Kicker shock but instead of a shock there is a steel rod.

I built trailing arms that leave the frame and attach to the axle tubes. This stoped my wheel hop and also helps keep the differential square under the truck. I dont know about you but I hate seeing those trucks that look like the back is trying to go in a different direction than the front. They are simalar to what you can find under a chevelle. And as far as strength I use my truck harder than I probably should as far as hualing heavy loads and have had no problems. Sorry I dont have any pics. I have also heard that adding a newer style overload sping can help but I have never tried it myself. Good luck with the project.

Thanks for the help guys. I'd like to stay away from welding on the D60, just for the originality factor. (Yeah I know, thats just plain picky) I found a place that makes traction bars for 67-up Chevys and GMC's, for around 160 bucks. I think the company is called Warrior, can't quite remember. But anywho. Thnaks for the help.

you can get stiffer springs for less than 200 bucks......Also, do you use lift blocks? If so than get rid of them and use the ORD shackle flip kit. If you don't have lift blocks then you could pull the springs, cut out the center bolt and start adding leafs from another set until you get to the stiffness that fixes it. you just use a 3/8 bolt of the proper length for the newly built spring pack. Even if you add an inch of new spring, it won't change the look of the truck enough to matter.

Well my shocks are absolutley shot in the back, so that may be one of my problems. I may try some helper springs, I don't know yet. I like using wheelhop to my advantage, it keeps me from spinning the tires.

But, theres been times when I'd kill to do a good powerbrake to back up the balls the 350 has.

WOW!!! I don't think i need anything quite like that. Those are rugged, are they welded to the rear axle housing or bolted on somehow?

yes there welded to the rear. in the front they are mounted using ford front axel strut brackets. this thing realy hooked up so i been told. it had a built big block and would lift the front wheels 3 foot in the air. i neverseenit but was told by more than 1 person who knew the owner before theguy i got it from
