Junkyard score

So I was out and about Sunday and decided to swing by a local wrecking yard...just to see what they had. Knowing they specialize in late model vehicles, I wasn't expecting to find much. Well, to my surprise, they had ONE 73-87 there...it was a '87 GMC 4wd. So I walked up to it and immediately noticed it had a complete black interior in it! Once I quit oogling over the seat belts, I snooped around a little more and discovered these little gems behind the seat. These are 6x9 speaker enclosures, made of aluminum, and they looked and fit perfect in the cab corners! They were held in place with rivits (in the same location the factory 4x10's are screwed to), and other than being dirty and having a bad paint job, they appeared to be in great shape. I was soo excited I found these I could hardly wait to go back after work on Monday to retrieve them (I got there just before closing on Sunday...with no tools). So, Monday after work I went back...and as luck would have it...they were still there. However, someone had been there during the day and tried to remove them..they must not have had their drill with them to drill out the rivits, and they were still there waiting for me...talk about luck!

So, anyhow, has anyone else seen a set like this? Are these aftermarket brackets made by a mfr...or do you think these were fabbed by a private party? Regardless, they will be going in Yeller...after they are cleaned up and painted. I might go ahead and transfer the dimensions of the brackets in CAD and see if I can't reproduce a set or two of these.

Oh, and I did grab the seatbelts too.

Jeff look like aftermarket, or some one owns a fab shop built them. Awesome quality regardless.

OK, got the template drawn in CAD, going to make a posterboard mock up tonight or tomorrow and see how close it is/test fit it. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Junkyard score

Put me on the list as well. I was going to try and figure out a way to get 6x9 in the cab corners with an enclosed box but after seeing these puppies I'll save time and $.

Re: Junkyard score

Same here, I "just stoped by" my local yard last week no tools and found a 79 with factory tach and double hump crossmember. Thank God they were there the next morning. If you do make the speaker panels sign me up for a pair.

Custom made. I have a set of aftermarket enclosures. The enclosers have a grill to cover up the speaker.

Re: Junkyard score

David, funny you shoud ask...I was just messing with them yesterday. I am in the process of making a slight adjustment of the bracket design, so they fit better. Once done, I am going to have one set made, test fit, and go from there. If they fit fine, I'll have additional sets made...and of course, let you guys know.

Having a 9 week old at home has severely limited my "garage time". Sucks, but she is worth it.

Congrats Jeff! I have a 4 month old boy myself.....so I know about garage time, or lack of. No hurry, just want a set when there available. David

Jeff, keep me in mind too. I picked up a cassette/radio from an '82 'vette and would like to have something like that for the speakers.

Re: Junkyard score

Hi I'm really interested in a set of your speaker pods that you made. I'm currently deployed to Iraq but will be coming home soon. I am curious if you have any left or are going to make any more? If you could please respond to my other email address, I would greatly appreciate it. It is raymond.lee.davis@us.army.mil It is alot easier for me to check that email more often. I have been looking for something like this for some time now and here it is, haha. Well any response would be great. Thank you for your time. Ray Davis
