Tranny update
Hey Guys,
I got the 700r4 bolted up over the weekend. Tanny lines are run, and I'm ready to hook up the TV cable. I'm running this tranny behind a 75' 250. Those of you who know these engines, and the 1bbl carbs on them know the linkage runs behind the carb 90 degrees from the way it would on a V8. I'm sure I can come up with something as my moto is "No job is too tough", I sure would love to hear from someone who has done this set up. TV that is. Some pics would be cool too. Looks very nice.......Im interested in the performance once you get it going. I thought this would be a nice combo for some type of ride.

Nice looking install, Tim. I know what you're describing with the throttle linkage. I haven't done the TV cable, but I'm thinking it might be easier to run it parallel with the fore-aft linkage. There's not a lot of room to work around the 90 degree bellcrank area. Could you attach the cable near the bottom of the first link (opposite end from where the pedal link attaches).
I'd start holding the cable up in the various possible orientations, and then think about which way would be easiest to build a cable mount for.

Hey Guys,
Greg, I went back out to the garage after posting this thread last night, and I looking at maybe doing what you're talking about. My only concern is bending the cable 90 degrees. I've read where you don't want to do this, but this is my first TV cable, so I really don't how big a deal it is. Yes, the driveshaft will have to be shortend. Around 2" or so I haven't got that far. Yes, the crossmember is money well spent, unless you're some hot shot welder, which I'm not. It fit beautifuly. Tim Last edited by Tim64; 03-27-2008 at 02:57 PM. |

Tim, could the cable come in under the rear of the intake manifold, running parallel to the solid link on the top side? This would then connect at the place I was thinking of (bottom of the short vertical link). What have you got to work with on the end of the TV cable?

Look at the third picture in your original post. Greg is talking about the crank(linkage) that has the throttle rod, spring and carb linkage attached to it in the center of the pic. You might be able to run the TV cable parallel with the throttle rod but come in under the intake and attach the cable somewhere on this crank. Either way that you could route it (over/under the intake), this might be your best spot to attach the TV cable without binding it.

Tim, I think TimE has the right idea. I've mocked up your 3rd pic to show what I was thinking in white. I was thinking that this would keep the TV cable from binding up, which might happen if you go across the engine (side to side instead of fore-aft).

Glad you guys like the suggestion. You'll probably have to check the stroke of the TV cable, and then attach it to that bell crank at the appropriate distance from the pivot point so the travel works out correctly.

I plan on doing this to my 64 soon. It has 4.56 gears and a 283. I am wondering how I will hook up the TV cable to an old 2 bbl. |

Looks like it worked out well. Good job Tim! Has this mod helped much on your gas mileage? I'm sure starting out from a dead stop feels better with the deeper ratio of 1st gear.

I haven't checked the mileage yet, but I will be doing so next time I fill up. It sure does run down the highway a hell of a lot better. Next I'm going to add a tach, so I can see what the rpms really are. All in all drivability has improved greatly.

With my 283 700r4 with 3.08 gears, doing 70 mph the tach is at 1800 rpm's. I love this tranny!! Looks like you did a great job with yours!! Go enjoy it!!
