Thanks, it's a lot of fun and a whole lotta work! Sometimes I think a truck would be easier, then I look at the wreck of a truck in my backyard.
I'm not trading my Burb for anything!

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

This week I finished the A-pillar and the drivers side door panel. I made a bracket and stud for the third door:

A-pillar. I need to Dual-lock tape it still.

Driver door panel. I need to clean the seat and fix the tear.

Took the night off and took the family to the drive-in.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

This week I made some progress. I painted my dash gauge bezel and made the gauge backing white. Maybe this next weekend I will start prepping the top for paint.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

OK....I finally got to work on the console. My kids have been playing in the sub again, and I noticed there were cracks in several parts so I put another layer of fiberglass on the bottom. I also put a filler peace where the gages were.

Colorful!

I covered the top with dark vinyl then made two side pieces then covered them with light vinyl. What do ya think?

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

All Saturday I spent sanding the roof of the burb, and it's ready for paint except the seam sealer. I bought some 3M Heavy Drip-Chek sealer, we'll see how good it is. I also painted the sun visors from the 70 GMC. They were that nice bright green. They were in really good shape and the best part they were free.

Very nice as usual. I think you need some cup holders for the back seat in the rear of that console.

I was originally going to do that, but the back did not end up flat. The fiberglass warped in that section. The rear seat has a nice cup holder, but I can't fold it down I need the seat.

That is a very good question. I might hide the gauge in the dash or make a pod. I want keep it classy. The swichtes will be shifter paddles on the stearing wheel. Uh No , that would be dangerous. I'm still looking for ideas?

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

I'm Glad the console turned out well. Thanks for the kind words from every one. Last night I glued the foam at the front because it was pushing down on the head liner. I used two adjustable mops. Tonight I picked up some vinyl for the head liner. I used spray adhesive and hot glue on the edges. The hard part was getting the panel to fit back in the bow.
The only way was to only put one side in the groove and have the other side rest on top. the front section still bows a little so I'll have the add something to stiffen it.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

Yes! The paint is finally finished. Here is were I was Saturday finishing up the drip-check sealer and masking off the rest of the truck. I took off the hatch and prepped the hatch seal.

It helps to have a peace of plastic 10' X 80'.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

Well, I spent an hour trying to find the spring to my paint gun. It seems that my kids were playing in the garage and put it in a large box of bolts. After calming down for another hour I started painting.

I had a little orange peal. No problem, Just wet sand with 1200 grit sand paper and soapy water.

I used Meguiar's Solo Cut & Polish to gain that shine.

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

Thanks, I'm glad someone is enjoying my hard work.
I may not be an expert, but I think I am a good Jack-of-All-Trades. In the next couple of weeks I need to get a new windshield, when I was re-installing this one I cracked it. I ordered an air compressor off e-bay, it's a viair 400 with air filter, relay and pressure switch for 150 bucks. I also ordered some speakers and an amp for a future speaker box in the rear. One of these weekends I'll take the burb out and get some nice pictures of it actually completed.
I am really excited to start on my next project "One for the road".

Re: 1972 3dr Suburban Build Thread

I received my compressor Tuesday and I also bought a 5 gallon air tank. Its only rated to 125psi, but I really don't need any more than that. I also made a sign for shows, the bottom says it all.

I bought two sets of stencils. I used acrylic water based paint for the letters and clear coated after words for protection from the weather.

Well, I'm not trying to keep a secret. It is a '71 long bed chyenne, (it is the one I bought and posted a picture of in April.) I plan on converting it into a short bed with some up grades. I've been collecting parts for over a month now, my wife's uncle does metal recycling and he's come across some really good stuff lately; a '70 GMC, a '70 Chevy tailgate and fender, stuff like that. I've just been putting the finishing touches on the Burb and getting it ready for the shows this summer. "One for the road" Will be a truck I can drive daily and will be reliable and economical. Basis is a '71 Chyenne, 4.3 Vortec engine, with overdrive auto transmition. I've got my short bed frame cleaned up and painted black all ready for the conversion. I'll start my post sometime in July.
