Tie rod thread size/pitch?

Does anyone know the tie rod thread size and pitch (one of them is reverse, of course)? I need to pick up a couple of dies to clean up the threads on mine after I cut them down, but I don't have the truck right now to measure them. Parts are 71+, I believe.

Anyone? Would the manufacturers website list that data?

Re: Tie rod thread size/pitch?

You really shouldn't need a die to clean-up the threads. Just thread a nut on the shaft and after you cut and chamfer the end, back the nut off. This should take care of it. Finding a left hand threaded die, for a one-time use? expensive.
Size ...I would guess 5/8"-18

Thanks, guys. I'm going to be cutting them down... and so I wanted the die on there to chase the threads back into place after the cut. A nut will probably do it just fine... which means I need to pick up a nut that will fit (including the reverse thread one)... so the size is still a question I need to resolve. I may have to take a trip to see the truck, pull a tie rod, and just take it to the hardware store. As for price of a couple of dies... I found a 5/8-18 LH online for $15. Cheap enough if I knock off a few 7-11's

$15 is not bad, but it is still a "one-time" use thing? Triangle file?

Re: Tie rod thread size/pitch?

If your going to need the nuts anyway, that would be the route I would go. When cutting a threaded shaft, I always jamb a double nut on the shaft, then cut off what I don't need. When your done you have two nuts on the good side to chase the threads with.

But you probably already knew that...

It is better to have 2 nuts, yes.

Re: Tie rod thread size/pitch?

On my 79 they where 11/16-18. It wasn't a common size I was trying to find heims for it and nobody had them. Ended up sticking with the tie rods.
