Take it or leave it!

This most likely belongs in the Suburban area but I put it here because I may use it for parts for my 82 short bed.

I have a chance to pick up an 86 Chevy Suburban with a 454/400 combo for around 800 bucks. Here’s the catch, the truck caught fire under the hood and melted the distributor cap, plug wires and some of the wiring harness so it does not run. He said a carb problem caused the fire and he has a rebuilt carb that comes along with the deal. Other than the engine (if I was sure it would run) I could use some of the front clip and maybe the power windows/locks from the front doors. I checked build sheet and the rear end is a 4.10 but I'm not sure if its a posi or if it will even fit in the 82 so I don't know if I can use it. The rest would be offered to the Suburban crowd here and then it would be off to the crusher.

So should I take it or leave it?

Thanks
Robert

Re: Take it or leave it!

id offer him 500 for it, and if he dont take it, then leave it, unless ur 100% u can get the motor runnin again, and that the parts will fit ur 82.

Re: Take it or leave it!

as far as im concerned anything that doesnt run is junkyard price i wouldnt go more than $250 which is what scrap cars seem to go for here.. a year or so ago it wouldnt have been more than $50 before scrap metal went nuts .. the chassis on a burb is wider than that of a pickup..so the rear should not be a direct bolt up..

Re: Take it or leave it!

Scrap is back down again, not as low as it was, but down anyway. Can you get it running by putting a cap, rotor & wires on it? You can just the dizzy power feed wire direct to a battery, and jump the starter wire to a positive source to get it to start (you only need to do that if the main harness is burnt).

I'd want to hear the motor run for $800

454 blocks go for about $300-$350 as a good buildable core

Frame is diff. in length but not wider, rears are the same. Wouldn't be afraid of electrical fire, especially if you are going to use the wiring in your own truck again and don't need the donor truck wiring. As for around here, none of the state auction vehicles go for less than $300.00 (minimum scrap value). so its worth at least that. If you have a use for it, offer what its worth to YOU. He can always say no. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Take it or leave it!

I offered him 600.00 but he would'nt go for it. He is not willing to go lower than 800.00. Thanks for the info on the rear end. I should have copied down the code for the rear to see if it is a posi but was on my bike and did'nt have a pen and there was no one around when I looked at it. I can't do anything until Tuesday bacues I have some heavy equipment rented until then and for the $$$ it's costing me to rent it I can't let it sit.

Thanks for the info.
