Serpentine Belt System?

I’ve been told that most any GM system will fit my 283 SBC and that the basic hardware is fairly reasonable, price-wise, at the local junk yards (vs. $1,200 to $1,800 new / polished systems). Anybody done this before?

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

I have seen this done but it may depend on the bolt pattern on the front of your heads. Meaning you may have to run the later model heads in order for it to work.

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

You are correct Mac. Summit racing sells the whole system w/ accessories or Ive seen them on Craigslist for 45 bucks, no accessories. Usaully off or similar to the 90's set-ups. I have one for BBC and its steel, although later the brackets were cast aluminum. Not as pretty as the aftermarket stuff, but way cheaper; depends on the priorities I suppose.

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

I went to the summit catalog picked out the cheapest complete system, then went to my G.M. parts department showed them the ad,and they matched the price! picked it up 2 days later, they just dont tell you they will do this because most people don't ask,and "corprate policy" dictates that they cant tell you........as far as bolting up this system up to a 283 take a photo of the front of your engine and compare it to a 350 say at your local salvage yard,or find a "survice manuel" and compare photos....good luck...

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

The serp set up off of a 4.3 will work as well. Thats what I did in my 89 s-dime when I converted to a SBC. You just have to get a reverse rotation water pump and shes as good as gold

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

You have to have the accesorie holes in your heads. A 65 283 won't have them. You can get the whole set up at Summit for about $650 brand new. I bought one for my BB and it was $750..

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

I got this off of ebay for 175 + 45 shipping. It's used but had Altenator, AC compressor, PS pump. I had to buy a reverse rotation water pump. It also came with all bolts in their respective holes. It was cleaned and repainted. Like everyone else has said you need the 3 accessory holes on the front of the heads. You can drill and tap your heads to accomendate, if you feel brave.

You can barely see the holes in this pic.

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

This is the kit that Summit sells. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku . It has the A/C compressor. If you want it without the compressor it is $554 instead of $749. You have to remember everything is brand new and you get everything. I even got two belts in my kit. The part # for the kit without the compressor is NAL-12497697. And the kits do come with a water pump. I found a used set up for my SB for $120. Someone was parting out a 90 Chevy Truck. I never used it.

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

Excellent input guys - gives me a lot to think about when I get ready to put power steering in The Tan and then A/C later on. The adapting of used hardware to the 283 doesn’t frighten me - as I can fabricate any adapter brackets required, machining whatever I need to make it work.

Looking for a mid-priced set-up and what you’ve all come up with seems like it’s right up my alley. Thanks, Mac.

Re: Serpentine Belt System?

I got a set-up off of a 93 Chevy and bolted it up to my 69 block, I took it off my self so I had all the hardware that was needed. Only one bolt wouldnt go in and that is because the head wasnt drilled for it. It cost me 50 bucks for all.
