handheld sandblaster

Have any of you used one of these? I am thinking of trying one to clean up some of the rust/crud while I am under the truck near the frame. I don't want to do a frame off, nut would like to do a little clean up and painting while under there.

Never have used anything like that but, in all honesty it looks pretty pathetic. If that reservoir on top is all the capacity for sand it will be gone in less then 30 seconds and won't do much of anything. JM2 cents....

Be prepared for a lot of sand, a big mess, and your compressor running constantly.

I use one from time to time. They will work pretty good on small areas. They do make a mess. You regulate the flow of media through them, and can use just about any media you want: coal slag, play sand, glass beads, aluminum oxide.

Just remember it is for small areas and you won't get frustrated with it.

The price is less than $20, so I don't expect much...just trying to find a way to clean up some of those cracks and crevices I can't get into with a sander or grinder under the cab.

Craftsman makes one that holds 4 pounds, so compared to Harbor freight and Johns estimate, that one will last 90 seconds so not sure it is worth it. I only hope to do 1 sq. ft areas at a time.

I have the brand "speed blaster" works really good, just do it outside where you need some fill in your yard or something
i did it in the shop but used plastic sheeting draped from the ceiling, it caught most of it.

Well, I have the truck inside the garage (attached) with one rocker off, so moving it out is out of the question and sounds like I might REALLY p*** my wife off if I use it. I guess I better get my a** out there and just grind sand and wire wheel as much as I can.

I told Mine she has the house so that means the garage is off limits to her saying to what can or can't be done (to a certain extent)

Yea I tried the "this garage is mine, the house is yours" and it worked for like 2 weeks. Man she has a lot of stuff. I got a 10x12 shed yesterday and started to put it together. Wife asked is that for my stuff? I said yup... i need my garage back!! She just laughed and said she was sorry.

just get a grinder and a wire wheel...can't beat it...

I have heard that "scalers" work well though..

they aren't worthless. You have to use them for what they are intended for. You can't get a grinder and a wire wheel in a lot of places so why aren't they considered worthless? use them together, grinder where you can, blaster everywhere else. You will be filling constanly though. Your best bet would be one that sticks in a 5 gallon bucket, or they make one that as a carry along container, Harbor Freight, sears. You won't be filling those as much.

and those might be better... but I have one of these and feel that it's worthless...

I've tried multiple types of media and if never keeps working... I also have one that hooks up to a pressure washer and I sold the one that I used on my frame (pressure sand blaster)

Yeah i agree,
I never had a problem with it but if you expect the thing to do the job of taking it to have a frame done it will disapoint you in that aspect, but other than that it works ok for the $20..

Hi Olecurt,
I used a similar product many moons ago to get into some small spaces and it worked fine... will tax small compressor as others said. Get an extra nozzle if you're gonna use it quite a bit.
